Scholar of Expertise, Global Health & Migration Policy / 1st Gen Academic with a passion for Student Success & Improving Education-to-Employment Pipelines / Disability & Accessibility Advocate / 🇵🇭🇨🇦🏳️🌈🧑🏾🦯
Two of my most favourite disability focused organizations are doing a collab for #InternationalGuideDogDay. 🐶🧑🏾🦯🦮 As somebody with congenital vision loss, I participated with CNIB’s #ComeToWork program and worked with Gateway Association Alberta when I was learning about disability employment services at large (thank you Gene Lachica and Jae Lee). I learned a lot from them and also found Gateway to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Hub Alberta as an indispensable information resource when I was helping build the employment services program for newcomers, immigrants, and refugees with disabilities at the Centre for Newcomers. Working as a person with disabilities, and with people with disabilities - in the frontline - and not mainly as an academic researcher - taught me so much about how #disabilitypolicy gets operatizonalized on the ground. It is complex and there’s definitely a lot of room for continuous improvement. There’s the huge funding cuts in the immigrant and refugee settlement sector, the lack of a sustainable health human resource pipeline in the disability sector, and the sheer difficulty of persuading employers to see the gifts and geniuses - and most of all resilience - of people facing #intersectional barriers. And then there’s how government funded programs are designed with metrics and KPI’s that do not reflect the amount of work performed by job developers, career practitioners and employer relations specialists - required to position a candidate possessing marginalized intersectional identities in the job market. Have you tried to look for a job lately? I want to challlenge decisionmakers, policymakers, program and policy analysts to sit in one of the workshops designed for this clientele and help them find a job within 90 days; and witness the amount of expertise on #crossculturalcommunication, #accessibility and #disability required on top of reporting demands - and the emotional labour demanded from frontline staff. And then - decide if it’s reasonable to put a KPI of 12 job placements a month (per job developer staff) for the sub-population, which includes introducing them individually to employers who have to be educated about #accommodations and our legal rights as people with disabilities. #Accessibility looks great as a slogan in paper, but very messy in reality. This last few of years brought me back to the “field” where I used my #ethnographic sensibility and use my #positionality as somebody who is racialized and disabled to make sense of how we can build sustainable programs co-designed with and for us. I’m honestly still reflecting and figuring things out, so if you have any suggestions or insights, let me know? But the work of organizations like Gateway Association Alberta and CNIB have guided me through this process. So if you have a chance - join Robert Fenton in this event! #nothingwithoutus

Vacation Rental Business Strategist | Business Strategy Roadmap | Revenue Growth Expert | Custom Linen Program Build | Inventory Curation Planning
Good webinar coming up on Feb 9 from Sara Sokol Don't be afraid of recommending to your Property Owners to welcome dogs at their properties! I personally found dogs easier on properties than kids! Love kids and Guests with kids before y'all send the hate mail! My revenue advice to Property Owners regarding welcoming dogs was that not to look at it as a revenue stream in terms of higher rates, but to look at it as a revenue source. Properties that welcome dogs are still a minority. Welcoming dogs automatically elevates your property in Guest searches. You will book quicker and garner more repeat Guests even if you don't necessarily get higher rates. If you do accept dogs, don't just make it lip service. Make the dogs as welcome as your Guests! Who Let the Dogs In; Helping to make hosting dogs easy for you, your cleaners, and your guests! Join Sara Sokol, creator of the Dogs Welcome community, and a panel of Dogs Welcome hosts as we discuss ways to make welcoming dogs to your short term rental fun, easy, painless, and lucrative. Experienced Entrepreneur | Executive Coach | Vistage Chair | Die-Hard Believer in People | Strategist & Facilitator | Expert at Overcoming Adversity
#WednesdayWisdom ... If you want something done right, bring in the big dogs 😂 World, meet Frankie (short for Frank & Beans, because evidently in my family, every animal must be named after food?) Frankie is a Great Pyr/Great Dane mix and is... fiercely loyal, more concerned about his "circle" and their needs than himself ... and more in love with his job (which is construction assistant) than you can imagine. To turn this into a nugget of business thinking, I'd like to shamelessly plug #Vistage Chairs. They too fit the same descriptors as Frankie. It most certainly gets lonely at the top for CEOs, and we all need a coach and a circle that we can trust. Vistage chairs care more about their members than they do themself, and we take our jobs seriously, which is to see our members win. If you crave that type of circle, contact me, won't you? And remember: You can run with the big dogs, or sit on the porch and bark. Your call. Enjoy your week ... and finish strong! #executivecoach #bethechange #win

Bee Facts: 🐝 A single bee can visit up to 5000 flowers in a day 🐝 Bees communicate through a complex dance language known as the ‘waggle dance’ 🐝 Bees can recognise and remember faces 😮 🐝 One-third of the food we eat each day relies on pollination, mainly by bees Ok so I’ve got lost in the honeycomb a bit here researching bees, but it’s International Bee Day!! And being based in Manchester, I could not miss the opportunity to write a cheesy post celebrating these tiny little marvels! This is our dog, Fenton. 🐶 Fenton is Kiwi Avoidance Trained. 🐶 Kiwi Avoidance Training was the worst day of Fenton's life. 🐶 You will notice he is even scared of the sticker he received. In Mākara, we are very fortunate to have kiwi out and about, and it is important that he knows to leave them well alone. The way he learns to leave them well alone is by going through what we would describe as "The Kiwi House of Horrors." This avoidance training is essentially set up like a sort of haunted house or escape room but with kiwi smells, startling noises, hideous flashing lights... anything to create an association in the dogs' minds that kiwi are terrifying and should be, you know, avoided. I should mention that dogs are expected to be periodically retrained, which means we will be putting his name down to be disturbed and terrified at least once every few years. We are proud to be a part of the Mākara community, and although we understand that the training is not fun for Fenton, it is an important part of being a good neighbour and good kaitiaki. It is unlikely that the learning, development, & growth decisions you're making for your whānau or kaimahi involve flashing lights and deliberately distressing sounds & smells. But it's important to recognise that a #leadershipmindset sometimes requires us to go through a short term challenge with a longer term gain in mind. And yes, he was given many cuddles and treats afterwards. He is a very good boy. ❤️ #kaitiakitanga #learninganddevelopment #makingdifficultchoices #makingdifficultdecisions #leadership Department of Conservation (DOC)

New Post: If you have dogs, you must pay the cheese tax - https://lnkd.in/ggy7reBT - I'm a big fan of Matt Hobbs' Puppy Songs, those genius, catchy ear worms that perfectly describe life with dogs. One of my favorites is "Cheese Tax." If you have a dog, you already know that as soon as you start rustling the plastic bag of any type of cheese, the puppies come running and you have to pay the cheese tax. — Read the rest The post If you have dogs, you must pay the cheese tax appeared first on Boing Boing. - ----------------------------------------------------- Download: Stupid Simple CMS - https://lnkd.in/g4y9XFgR
