Stepping into the shoes of a manager isn't just about a title. It's about building bridges, not walls. Successful managers possess four key qualities that make them stand out. 1. Communication – They articulate their vision clearly, leaving no room for misunderstandings. Example: Instead of vague instructions, they give clear, concise directions to their team. 2. Empathy – They understand their team's strengths, weaknesses, and ambitions. Example: They support an employee struggling with a task instead of penalizing them. 3. Adaptability – They adjust their strategies as per the market or team needs. Example: They switch their teaching style to adapt to each employee's learning style. 4. Decision-making – They make informed choices that benefit the collective. Example: They hire a diverse group of people to include and balance different perspectives, skills and competencies. Something I would like to share with you that I haven’t heard in this context before that is core to my management thesis is: Alignment is a “first principle” concept and a requirement for building a sustainably profitable business. If you don’t have Alignment, you have problems. Another way to state it is that if you are having business problems, your business has alignment problems. Noun: Alignment. A position of agreement or alliance. Problems with sales: Are you providing the services and products your customers want as they want them? Problems with customers: Are you delivering what you said you would as you said you would? Problems with employees: Do they clearly understand their level of accountability and the reason why the company exists? Problems with business culture: Is everyone in the right seat? Are the core values of the company real? Problems with operations: Are the objectives clearly stated? Do they have the proper resource allocations and deadlines? Problems with marketing: Is the message reflective of the company? Are the deliverables truly reflective of the company? Problems with production: Have the proper investments been made based on the requirements? Does everyone understand their role and the desired outcomes? Alignment is a constant, always needing adjustment and re-evaluation. Business practices such as continuous improvement, strategic planning, vision building, metrics tracking, quarterly meetings, weekly meetings, and daily standups are all built, knowingly or unknowingly, around alignment. Alignment is a first principal concept designed into my objectives as a leader/manager (at every level). You need to be able to network effectively on behalf of your organization. 2.Informational Roles: Mintzberg's mentioned that receiving and communicating information are perhaps the most important aspects of a manager's job. °Monitor:Monitor your team, in terms of both their productivity and their well being. °Disseminator: Communicate potentially useful information to your colleagues and you team. °Spokesperson:Transmitting information about organization and its goal to the people outside it. 3. Decisional Roles: There are four decisions roles that the manager adopts.
