With the Olympic Games in full swing, the eventing competition in Versailles has concluded, and I wanted to share some insights from the results:
• 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 :
- 59 horses participated.
- The eventual podium finishers were already leading after this phase, with Laura Collett setting a historic record, closely followed by Michael Jung.
- Except for Christoph Wahler, who had an unfortunate fall during the cross-country phase, no horse that was retired, eliminated, or withdrawn after the second veterinary inspection had a dressage score below 30 points (Wahler scored 29.4).
• 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 :
- 56 horses completed the course (two riders fell and one retired due to the horse going lame).
- Only 10 horses finished with no time or fence faults (18% of those who completed the course); 7 of these finished in the Top 10, and all were in the Top 20.
- Of the remaining 3 horses in the Top 10, none accumulated more than 2 time faults, and the maximum score in the Top 20 was 7.2 points.
- Another 25 horses finished without obstacle penalties but incurred time penalties, representing 45% of those who completed the course.
• 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗝𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 :
- 51 horses participated (5 horses were not presented or failed the secondary inspection).
- Only 7 horses achieved a clear round without faults during the team final (14%), and 5 of these were in the final Top 10.
- In the individual final, 15 out of 25 horses managed clear rounds (60%).
- Only 4 horses completed clear rounds in both the cross-country and both show jumping phases, but none finished in the Top 3.
