One of the great things about travelling is trying different types of accommodation and seeing what works and what doesn’t, and where we can innovate in our own markets. It’s a challenge to totally reimagine small living spaces given they need the fundamentals of somewhere to sleep and somewhere to wash (as well as being warm & dry), but there are many ways to innovate around the edges. In Singapore I’ve been fortunate enough to stay in the Studio M Hotel Singapore for the week and have been really impressed how they’ve used height to make a relatively small footprint into a functional, inviting and comfortable living space. A great example of playing with the rules of design. What garden? There is no shortage of 5-star hotels in Taipei, Taiwan as is the case with other developed cities. The big difference being the ambiance or setting. In Bangkok some iconic, landmark hotels are on the bank of the massive Chao Phraya River that offer quaint boats to shuttle guests to and from the property. Some of the hotels feature sizable gardens and even Olympic-sized pools. In contrast the high-end hotels in Taipei are shoehorned mostly in concrete jungle without outdoor green spaces in which to enjoy a drink and relaxing downtime. The one shown, Miramar Garden Taipei Hotel, is prime example, being located at a busy intersection adjacent an elevated expressway. There are uniformed doormen at the property so the room rates would not appeal to travelers on a budget. Besides deep pockets, one also needs a lively imagination to see a garden at the hotel. #WhatGarden
