This past semester, I had the opportunity to do something I’ve been dreaming about since sixth grade— study abroad. I was one of the two lucky Bentley students given the chance to participate in the CIEE Open Campus Program, meaning I was able to study in 3 different locations for 6 weeks at a time. My journey began with a 24 hour plane ride to Sydney, Australia on New Year’s Eve. I was alone and 10,000 miles from home but the experiences I had, lessons I learned, and connections I made were among the most defining of my time abroad. My unconventional intercultural communications class raised philosophical questions about judgement, acceptance, and relativity that remain with me even now 5 months later. I was lucky enough to explore a lot of Australia during my short 6 weeks there, including scuba diving in the GBR, wandering around a few incredible museums, seeing a show in the opera house, and so much more. I definitely left a part of me in Sydney, and I dream of the day I can return. A 30 hour flight and a quick layover in China on Lunar New Year later, I arrived in Madrid, Spain! I quickly realized that my delusions of becoming fluent in Spanish with only a high school level education to support me would not come true, however I tried my best & definitely felt the language come back to me in a small part. Living in a country with a language barrier was challenging but also rewarding. I was lucky to be reunited with my travel buddy, Mira Welches, in whom I found a steadfast support system to help navigate any and all challenges for the next 3 months. It was an incredible privilege to take international journalism and international marketing— two courses with international right in the name— internationally! And finally, I ended my semester in London— a city I have wanted to live in forever. The sense of awe I felt upon arriving never left me, constantly excited remembering all the pop culture that takes root in this amazing city. Here I was brought back to my North Star, Sofia Tonin Hauschild , who guided me through London and showed me all of the best spots. I was able to participate in one of the coolest classes I’ve ever taken— Music and Media in Public Spheres. Getting to learn from an accomplished, passionate musician and being prompted to write creative essays on topics that interested me lead to some of my most compelling pieces on subjects like the New Wave genre and the politics of Boybands. I know this is a bit more writing than is usually warranted in a LinkedIn post, but I’m a passionate person and a writer at heart. I truly don’t have the words to describe how special this experience was for me. I return to America more confident, informed, mindful, grateful, and happy. This Spring is filled with incredible memories with some of my favorite people in the world and proof that I can stand on my own. I am so excited for what the future holds, and more than ever I hope it’s more opportunities to live abroad.
