Thank you Four Rivers Society for Human Resource Management for hosting me yesterday! Speaking to such an amazing group of leaders is always an honor. The topic was Internships. I've spoken about internships/co-ops from the perspective of a Director of Career Development, but yesterday I had the chance to share from a new perspective - a private company view. Trust me when I say, there is a big difference! Higher education professionals often only ask, "How can companies create the best experience for their interns?" However, companies have to expand the question to: "How can we create the best experience for our interns, given our current constraints?" At BFW/Marcum, we had some unique constraints this summer on our team's time, energy, and focus. Hosting 15 interns at multiple locations can be challenging enough; add moving our headquarters and launching a new logo to the mix and you create more tensions to manage. Luckily, we have a great team who rallied to provide a great internship experience! It started by developing 3 extraordinary touchpoints. The last one is today as we say thank you to our phenomenal interns at our Closing Session! 🎉 Happy National Intern Day! 🎉 Ah, the glamorous life of an intern—where we get the unique opportunity to "gain experience" and "build our network" while mastering the fine art of coffee brewing and copier repair🤹♀️. As an intern organizational psychologist with countless internships under my belt, I can truly say I've seen it all. From handling complex projects to providing real value to teams, my resume is nothing short of impressive🧠. Let’s take a moment to celebrate all the interns out there who are perfecting their multitasking skills by juggling real work and the ever-so-important task of making sure the office plants are watered🌱. Despite the sarcasm, I must admit all my experiences were actually invaluable, even if they were underpaid. I feel fortunate that I was given the chance to focus on meaningful work, rather than tasks like watering plants, making coffee, or fixing the copy machine🌟. So here’s to us—the unpaid, the underpaid, and the overworked. May we continue to grind, hustle, and occasionally be acknowledged for the actual contributions we make to our organizations🙌. As we strive for greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace, one powerful avenue is often overlooked: internships. Companies have a unique opportunity to not only provide valuable learning experiences but also to actively cultivate a diverse talent pipeline. Recent statistics from a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reveal that Black students accounted for only 6% of paid interns, and Hispanic students made up only 10.2% of unpaid interns. Financial barriers should never stand in the way of opportunity. Paid internships not only provide much-needed income for students but also ensure that access to valuable professional experiences is equitable for all. It's an investment in the future workforce and a step towards leveling the playing field. Understanding the importance of internships as more than just temporary roles where fetching coffee or making copies should be the norm. Internships should be carefully designed to not only provide valuable work experience but also to serve as an opportunity for both interns and the company to assess if it is a mutual fit. By giving interns real responsibilities and allowing them to contribute to real projects, you can create a win-win situation where both the intern and the company can learn and grow together.
