Last month, I was the party pooper.
The photo shows me giving a talk at a conference in Slovenia a few weeks back.
At the conference, there were 130 entrepreneurs sitting in front of me, eager to have a good time. They were excited about partying, drinking, eating whatever food they liked.
(Not sure during my speech, but generally sleep wasn't on their minds either.)
Then I took the stage, delivering a talk about why focusing on good food, having fewer drinks and better sleep is the best way to boost your business longterm.
Bummer!
I became the party pooper.
I didn't dictate anyone's choices, but I shared my story, and the underlying message was clear:
"It's better to do a lot less of what you're planning to do in the next couple of days."
But I wasn't bothered.
My mission was to influence 2-3 people in the audience to start thinking. Ideally, those 2-3 people, who need to hear it most.
Every journey begins that way.
The first time I considered changing my lifestyle was when I reconnected with a friend after a long time. I realized that he hadn't aged a day in the 10 years I hadn't seen him.
Learning about his lifestyle made me realize why. That initial spark needed more years and more interactions, but it eventually led me down this path. It was a start.
So, if I could plant a seed with just one person in that audience, then enduring being the party pooper for a night was completely worthwhile.
Interestingly, the lunch buffet after my talk had plenty of meat, vegetables, and sweets, and the vegetables were the first to be finished. I'd never seen that before on a conference.
Of course, for many, that night still involved lots of beers or gin-tonics, or even both. A lot of them went for pizza and ice cream for dinner. And that's okay.
I just hope that a few years from now, 1 person will approach me and say, "Tim, what you shared on stage back then... it was one of the stepping stones that led me to change."
That is worth being the party pooper for many more times to come. 😅

Of course, the term "party pooper" is intentionally exaggerated here. After all, you can also have really good parties in a healthy way. 🙃
