"Volunteering on a local nonprofit board has changed my perspective on some things I used to say with ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY, and with a microphone. As an example: 'The federated model is inefficient. All organizations are on the path to single corp, without exception.' Here’s where the federated model works brilliantly. Because the national organization is protected by a separate 501c3, they don’t mess with us. We do all sorts of things that I know, for sure, would be shot down by a rigid structure. Example: we run a thrift store. When I first heard about this, my single-corporation heart fell. I thought, 'Oh no, so much energy to make so little money with no mission connection.' We're excited to share a new report from National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, "Cracks in the Foundation: Philanthropy’s Role in Reparations for Black People in the DMV," which delves into repairing, healing, and restoring communities affected by charitable wealth origins. It provides a framework for #foundations to not only understand their past, but how they may start acknowledging and addressing these harms with community residents. This report, initially focusing on the DMV, offers a model for cities and regions everywhere. As the Nonprofit Help Center & Merit® Nonprofit Professional Development team and I have grown our work, we've always had one simple goal: to provide equitable access to quality professional development for nonprofit professionals and organizations. Today, I'm humbled and proud to share that Merit® supports over 330 nonprofit teams and counting. Each of these nonprofits represents a unique mission, a vision for a better world, and leverages dedicated individuals working tirelessly to make it happen. From the client-supporting learners who squeeze in their learning from their phones while on-site to the team leads who integrate Merit® learning paths into team member year-round performance enhancement...from the passionate individuals pursuing our Certificate in Nonprofit Capacity Building program to the entire boards enrolling in our Nonprofit Board Member Basics course: It's an honor to be part of their growth. Our journey is far from over, and there's still much work to be done. But together, we're building a stronger nonprofit sector, one learner, one team, one coalition at a time.
