Did you know that Canada has committed to addressing the needs of Black communities across the country by endorsing the United Nations Decade of Black people/people of African descent? The Decade was initially declared by the UN General Assembly in 2015, recognizing the promotion and protection of human rights for people of African descent. Two weeks ago, the Prime Minister's Office announced an extension of the Decade in Canada until 2028. Canada's Action Plan Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative includes several initiatives that aim to improve social and economic outcomes for Black communities. These initiatives include a $200 million fund for Black-led, Black-focused, and Black-serving charities and non-profits, a $200 million Black-led philanthropic endowment fund, a $265 million Black Entrepreneurship Program, and a $10 million Mental Health of Black Canadians Fund. To celebrate the history, culture, accomplishments, contributions, and future of Black Canadians and their communities, the Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program (MARP) will include a new priority in its Events component for 2024. Canada's commitment to the Decade is a significant step towards recognizing and addressing the needs of Black communities across the country. 📢📚 New Blog Post Alert! 📚📢 Unearthing Canada's Buried History: Confronting the Legacy of Slavery and its Impact on Black Communities For too long, Canada's history of slavery has been overshadowed by the Underground Railroad, leaving an uncomfortable past in silence. As Emancipation Day approaches, we must confront this reality and its lasting effects on Black Canadians. Racism persists today, demanding a deeper understanding of its historical roots. A recent report exposes the lack of philanthropic support for Black communities, urging the creation of a Foundation for Black Communities and a decolonizing approach in the charitable sector. Let's honour the past, amplify black voices, and work towards a more equitable future. Read Now: https://lnkd.in/grM2JbRt #EmancipationDay #ConfrontingSlavery #EquityForAll

The world and America in particular needs this: volunteerism, civic duty and service are something sadly that seems to be at a loss in my country. The opportunity I had to serve in the Peace Corps helped me realize the necessity of community engagement and cohesion and the immense need for these opportunities for citizens around the world to build strong and resilient democracies at the local and national levels. I am also reminded of Robert Putnam’s “Bowling Alone” and an update he wrote in 2010, reflecting on the imperative of “social capital” which research has shown makes “citizens happier, healthier, reduces crime and makes governments more responsive, and honest and improves economic prosperity…” https://lnkd.in/ejFsvTs9 - all of this to say: building this social capital is imperative fo “any democracy, any society can’t be healthy without this resource…” (paraphrased!) - Americorps and Peace corps forging a stronger partnership can only be beneficial to growing social capital and I encourage all of us to look closer at our own civic engagement and service to our communities- this is where change and development starts.
🌟 Big News! 🤝 Peace Corps and AmeriCorps are forging a strategic partnership to rally all Americans for a brighter, sustainable future. Together, we're dedicated to recruiting and retaining members and volunteers who are committed to advancing the cause of peace, friendship, stronger communities, and civic engagement through service and volunteering. Haiti 🇭🇹 is the first black independent country that has set the standard for the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Unfortunately, it is the only country in the Americas in the Least Developed Countries where people don’t have access and opportunities. Despite the resilience of its people , there are many other factors that continue to plague on the country’s economy. The best way to advance the Haitian’s people greatness is to create access and opportunity for them to thrive . Despite being considered as one of The Least Developed Countries, the people continue to hope for the better and do better . W.K. Kellogg Foundation is working with partners to break the stigma and cycle of poverty and change the environmental dysfunction and lack of access . Haiti needs urban development and economic growth with long term planning so it can graduate from its status quo as the only underdeveloped country in the Western Hemisphere and develops its economy with sustainable growth to create more opportunities and access of resources for the Haitian people … Haitian people want to change the narrative about Haiti 🇭🇹 and want better infrastructure, better governance, and a more positive outlook for Haitian’s future and across the media . Haitian organisations need to create community fund foundations to invest in local projects to strengthen their communities to keep Haiti clean, more sustainable, more community oriented before foreign investment becomes available to invest in private sector and projects . The pathways to Haiti’s prosperity will come through modernizing its infrastructure and sustainable development and creating master planning with international standards with the best architecture construction and engineering firms in the world to help it rebuild its cities and towns with scalable projects and capacity building so that it can attract more foreign investment and create national wealth strategies to support its future economy and invest in key sectors such real estate, food production, sovereign wealth fund and pension systems for a thriving future generation… Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction Norman Foster Foundation Zaha Hadid Foundation #civicengagement #haiti, #economicempowerment #civicleadership https://lnkd.in/e8gtSM8d

Cultural Economist helping leaders build a common ground of understanding and collaboration on race and economic equity
In every generation, from before the founding of this nation, through the Civil War and Black Reconstruction, and throughout the eight tumultuous generations since to the present day, the Christian church has played a key role in influencing political power and racial dynamics in America. The struggle to build a more equitable and Inclusive America for a multiracial multicutural society versus the struggle to sustain the status quo of white power, wealth and influence has always been a war within the Christian church itself. https://lnkd.in/gErABYjV
