“If national brands can’t improve the quality of their goods, then they need to lower prices to compete.” With US #grocery prices up 26% since 2019, more #consumers are turning to store / private brands. So are retailers. Walmart and Ahold Delhaize USA have each launched major private brand growth initiatives, trying to keep up (catch up?) with the likes of Trader Joe's , and ALDI USA, each of whom derive more than 60% of sales from own-brand goods. https://lnkd.in/ehHZNDM9

In the short term, grocery retailers will need to get creative to keep fresh meat sales strong under intense inflationary pressures. Longer-term, supermarkets need to make sure they keep their eyes fixed on the youngest consumers and their (very different) meat buying patterns. Retail, Foodservice & Wholesale SME / Produce Industry Veteran / Relationship Builder / Writer & Columnist / Connector
The US Retail Market Watch report for #freshproduce numbers are in for March and the headline is what was expected. "An Early Easter Catapulted Fresh Produce Volume" In March, fresh fruits and vegetables were up a combined 5.1% in dollars and 3.8% in unit volume. Numbers we have not seen for a one month period in quite some time. In week five of March (Easter week) total fresh produce dollars we up a full 9.5% and an equally healthy unit volume increase of 9.6% which indicated that inflation was a not factor and #retailers promoted the holiday heavily with strong consumer demand. All that shines may not be gold Yes as we look back on March there is much to feel good about, but with an early Easter, April could see the numbers fall back some. Consumers increasingly (95%) say they are concerned over higher food costs which actually is a good indicator for retail grocers. Because with more pressure on the food away from home dollar, now is the time to capitalize on that trend. According to NRA nearly half of restaurant operators report same store sales are down from a year ago. But #foodservice is fighting back with dynamic pricing models and utilizing their apps to pass along better food prices to those consumers who order ahead. Another trend is in how consumers are engaging more in occasion shopping, now is the time to have a strong plan to capitalize on occasions and there are numerous occasions and holidays coming up. What I am looking for in April and even as far out as May is how retailers and they're supply partners build a strategy to highlight seasonal offerings and build toward the ever important summer selling season which will kick off with Memorial Day.
