Honouring Our Foremothers Established in 1962 by the Pan-African Women’s Organisation, Africa’s Women’s Day honours the pivotal role of women in building a strong Pan-African identity and driving social and economic progress. The Backbone of Our Economies From farmers to scientists, African women are the backbone of our economies. Their contributions are crucial for inclusive growth and sustainable development. As the AU Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki emphasises, it's our duty to protect and uplift all women and girls, especially those displaced. A Call to Action Let’s commit to achieving gender parity by 2025. Investing in the education and skills of women and girls is essential for a brighter, more equitable Africa. Young girls in conflict-affected areas face unimaginable challenges but with collective efforts we change that. Through collaboration, we rapidly achieve our goal of transforming societies. Through empowerment sessions we equip girls from the Mbororos community l with crucial knowledge and skills. The session of Monday carried out by @WPDCameroon with the support of HopeInclusion covered the risks/challenges faced by young adolescent girls and provided practical self-defense training. They were also taught how to advocate for their rights and become powerful agents of change in their communities. Note: young girls are resilient, brave, and deserve every opportunity to thrive. With the right support, they can overcome the obstacles in their path and build the future they deserve. On the occasion of International Women's Day, we pause to admire the remarkable achievements of women and girls worldwide, with a particular focus on the resilience and determination of Afghan women and girls. On this historical day, Afghanistan Center for Health and Peace Studies celebrates the remarkable achievements and resilience of Afghan women and girls. Despite facing significant challenges and threats to their rights, dignity, and lives, Afghan women and girls have demonstrated unwavering determination to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Despite the ongoing restrictions on their education and work, they have persisted in learning, teaching, creating, leading, and inspiring across various fields and sectors, including health, education, media, and politics. Over the past two decades, Afghan women and girls have made remarkable progress, with increased literacy rates, enrollment in all levels of education, participation in the workforce, and representation in decision-making bodies. According to UNESCO, the number of women in higher education had surged nearly twentyfold, from 5,000 female students in 2001 to over 100,000 in 2021. However, these hard-won gains are now under threat due to the current measures by IEA, which deprive Afghan women and girls of their fundamental right to education. We also salute the efforts of women worldwide who stand in solidarity with their Afghan sisters and demand an end to the violations of their human rights. As UN experts emphasize, 'quality education must be equally accessible to all' in Afghanistan. Despite the challenging and uncertain circumstances, we remain hopeful for a better future for Afghan women and girls, fueled by their bravery, dedication, and creativity. The Afghanistan Center for Health and Peace Studies is proud to contribute to efforts that enhance the capacity of Afghan women and girls in fragile states, particularly in Afghanistan. We are dedicated to advocating for their rights and providing them with platforms to amplify their voices. #SexistTextbooks: Hot off the press publication by the Center for Global Development, Lee Crawfurd, Christelle Saintis-Miller, Rory Todd. This is an eye-opening read and would redefine how we socialize boys and girls through learning/teaching materials. I've read through it. The key findings of the "Sexist Textbooks" report highlight the #pervasivegenderbias within educational materials across 34 countries, showing an #underrepresentation of female characters and a #predominance of #stereotypicalgender roles. Women and girls are often depicted in #passiveroles and #traditionaloccupations, with these patterns being influenced by a country's GDP and legal rights for women. The report underscores the critical need for #educationalreforms to combat #genderstereotypes and promote #genderequality from a young age. International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), Evelyne Opondo, we need a similar study for Kenya and East African Countries under our Equitable Social Norms and Power Dynamics pillar.
