From showbiz to SW1: The celebrities running to become your MP this general election A musician who's headlined Wembley, a double Olympic gold medallist and a man who became famous on TV because the nation liked watching him... watch TV, are just some of the celebrities standing in this week's General Election. With just days to go before the British public heads to the polls, the stakes are rising for parliamentary candidates hoping to become MPs on Friday - some of whom already know a thing or two about being in the public eye. Celebrities are no strangers to using their platform to raise awareness of socio-political issues and this election has been no different, with the likes of Presenter Carol Vorderman campaigning to oust the Tories and The Undertones' frontman Feargal Sharkey lobbying to protect England's sewage-ridden waters. Not trying to turn LinkedIn into a political circus, but my advertising brain is spinning like a cat chasing its tail with all these BJP and Congress ads blitzing my feed. Here’s my totally nonpartisan, slightly nauseous take: BJP’s strategy? Major major media money for a blame game than a sibling fight over the last cookie. Sure, it might rally the troops, but watching those furious faces over and over is like binge-watching a soap opera where everyone's perpetually outraged. Rating: 6/10 Congress? Riding the humor wave, throwing in some clever roasts that actually make me giggle-snort. Finally, some ads that don't make me want to throw my phone out the window. Rating: 8/10 Thoughts? #Elections2024 #advertising

🤔 BBC News using all the old clichés offered by politicians: hi-viz & hardhats; the dreaded folded sleeve open white shirt; picking up children, flag draped next to desk; and more flags but in long shot for Scotland..🏴 ALL in the top item of yesterday’s lunchtime news. We did this in the 80s and 90s. No wonder Gen Zs are disengaging from certain kinds of election coverage. I predicted this in my chapter of our latest general election media coverage book (in comments), alongside chapters by Stephen Coleman, Stewart Purvis and many others.

Are UK politicians wrong when thinking that likes on social media translate to votes? Or expecting that if their YouTube, Instagram or TikTok posts have been seen by many thousands people, those people will vote for them? I have been puzzled by the ongoing social media campaign in the UK. And even more puzzled by the reactions to it. For instance, digital strategist Phil Carr praised Labour's TikTok strategy, which, in his words, is inspired by "Ryanair and other irreverent business accounts". Hmm, comparing someone to a budget airline known for terrible customer service is not the best look in my books. So far, from what I have seen, a bunch of out-of-touch politicians attempting to be "relatable" on TikTok is more comedy than a campaign. I am not a UK voter, but I would expect and hope that voters are still interested in what kind of policies are being put forward than in social media entertainment. But then, a friend sent me the video below. I thought I was watching The Jerry Springer Show. No. I was watching a discussion in the US Congress. Specifically, a session in the Oversight Committee of U.S. House of Representatives. So maybe those responsible for the social media campaigning in the UK and beyond are on the trend. Maybe these days, people expect from their elected officials a full-blown circus act and the over-the-top antics that would make a soap opera writer blush. Maybe in this time and age, dry policy debates or thoughtful discourse is as exciting as watching paint dry. And maybe this is a warning for those who want to enter politics. In today's political landscape, being a decent human is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. Either check your principles at the door or prepare to be engaged in the theatrics. #elections #campaigning #politics #socialmedia #comedy #expectations #UK #USA https://lnkd.in/eP_qaW8n
