This is it! My big break! I've finally made it to the big leagues... Happy to announce to my network, friends, and clients, that I will in fact be attending Natural Products Expo West, in just two short weeks on behalf of SPINS! Being in the industry for just shy of two years now, I've heard so many things about this show. 70,000 people. The 2nd largest American tradeshow behind Consumer Electronics World Expo. Floor so big it's impossible to cover it all. And I get to enjoy that California sunshine for 5 or 6 days. As A midwestern who's sick of winter, this might be the most exciting part for me. 😂 SPINS has a whole slew of events planned, from speaking engagements, to happy hours. I love socioeconomics, think Steven Levitt, Freakonomics or Malcom Gladwell, Tipping Point. Trade-shows are a great opportunity for studying people, both exhibitors and attendees alike. I have found four types of attendees, when passing a booth they are not interested in. 1. People who say hello to everyone. 2. People who will cordially answer after being greeted. 3. People who just ignore a greeting and keep on walking as if nothing happened. 4. People who get really nervous look away or break out to a full out sprint to get away from you! Of course, it’s always fun when family and friends come to visit you, like my partner at Lake City Plating, Todd Bendis! What do you do at a trade show when an exhibitor you are not interested in greets you?

For people who attend or exhibit at trade shows like the one we just finished at Global Produce in Anaheim, what do you consider a successful show? I have had lots of people ask me if it was a good show, or a successful show for us. I think so, but what's the metric? What are you counting as wins? Winning awards, closing deals, making new contacts, maybe just presenting yourselves well? How do you measure whether you had a successful show or not?
