It’s a wrap 📢 The revised ITS Directive was adopted yesterday by the Council of Ministers of the EU after an agreement with the European Parliament. This is a very important piece of legislation for our community and we are pleased to welcome the final adoption which confirms the significant role of technology and the data economy in advancing the mobility and transport sectors. It also reaffirms its role as the European legislative backbone of various national, regional and local mobility initiatives where technology and data sharing are the key components.    The Directive accelerates and better coordinates ITS deployment in order to improve the functioning of road transport and its interfaces with other transport modes. Safety, sustainability and congestion reduction are the targets of the coordinated deployment of ITS in the EU. We invite you to fill out our UVARTech Mapping Survey! This survey is part of the EU project "#UVARTech_Mapping - Mapping study on digital and technical solutions to enable more effective and user-friendly urban vehicle access regulations (UVAR)". The main focus is to make it easier for foreign vehicles that meet emission standards of low/ zero emission ones (LEZ/ZEZ) to travel smoothly across those in the EU, without the need for lengthy pre-registration procedures or complicated conformity checks. We would like to know which current digital and/or technical solutions are being used in your city/country (in general) but also for compliance checks of cross-border vehicles (foreign vehicles). 🚢✨ Smart Fairways for for Enhanced Maritime Safety and Efficiency I'm thrilled to share our study, "Navigating the Future: Developing Smart Fairways for Enhanced Maritime Safety and Efficiency," is just out of press and available for all in Journal of Marine Science and Engineering. This collaborative research, alongside esteemed colleagues Heidi Himmanen, Olli Soininen, Sanna Sonninen, and Jups Heikkilä, underscores the digital transformation of Fairways. 🔍 Our study, born out of the research collaboration between the Turku School of Economics at the University of Turku, the Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto Traficom / Transport- och kommunikationsverket Traficom, Fintraffic, and Finnpilot Pilotage Oy Ltd., addresses the need for fairway modernization. We introduce the concept of Smart Fairways and identify both foundational and advanced service elements vital for supporting the next generation of digital and autonomous marine traffic. One of the aims of the new #TENTRegulation is to harmonise communication between #EU #MemberStates and #European institutions. To do this, the #TENtec system is being developed. When fully functional, the system is expected to speed up the exchange of information and accelerate the compiling of reports and maps of the corridors. However, there still seems to be no timeline for when the system should be deployed. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

Something important: sustainable urban mobility plan (#SUMP) "The co-legislators embraced the idea of strengthening the urban layer of the TEN-T policy. It was therefore agreed that a sustainable urban mobility plan (#SUMP), which is a long-term, all-encompassing integrated freight and passenger mobility plan for the entire functional urban area, should be established by 2027 for each urban node. The plan could include objectives, targets and indicators underpinning the current and future performance of the urban transport system. All 424 major cities along the TEN-T network are required to develop SUMPs to promote zero-emission mobility and to increase and improve public transport and infrastructure for walking and cycling. In addition, the co-legislators maintained the obligation to have at least one multimodal freight terminal per urban node by 31 December 2040, where economically viable." At one of its last meetings, the Transport Committee of the European Parliament debated the #CombinedTransportDirective today. Rapporteur Massimiliano Salini presented his working paper, while shadow rapporteur Thomas Rudner, as well as Tilly Metz who spoke on behalf of Anna Deparnay-Grunenberg articulated their questions and comments. 🔎 The parliamentarians showed a consensus over the definition of "combined transport operation", which according to the should be 1️⃣ free of uncertainties, 2️⃣ easy to comprehend and use, as well as it should 3️⃣ not pose any additional administrative burden. 👉 UIRR's proposed definition, which satisfies all of these requirements, can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gXHTT7bt ❗ Annika Kroon responded on behalf of the European Commission, among others, providing a reassurance that the advanced state of the #eFTI (Electronic Freight Transport Information architecture) will guaranty the easy functioning of the new definition. ℹ The requirement to reduce the operating costs of combined transport by "at least 10%", proposed by the Commission, should be evaluated on the basis of those Member States, whose regulatory framework provides the greatest level of internalisation of #externalcosts (of road haulage): and even in the case of the leader in this field #Austria, we can say that a gap greater than 10% exists today. 👉 The Annex IV. of the CTD Impact Assessment deals with the methodology, and the conditions that support the "at least 10% target" can be found from p.96 here: https://lnkd.in/d3Pp_VHb 🔊 Additional information on the Combined Transport Directive amendment will be provided at the Rail Forum Europe breakfast event - hosted by Andrey Novakov - in the European Parliament building on Tuesday, 9 April.
