✨ In case you missed it ✨ On June 22, 2024, CAPSITE hosted a 12-mile bike tour in Washington DC to highlight several bicycle facility projects that were designed by our members. The 12-mile loop route visited several recently completed facilities in the city, such as along the 4th St SW, 15th St NW, Virginia Ave NW, 20th St NW, 9th St NW corridors and the Metropolitan Branch Trail. 🚵♂️ Along the route, volunteers from the 16 bike tour attendees provided brief explanations of project development, unique features, and design constraints for each project. The tour helped highlight the continuing effort that the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is making in implementing Active Transportation projects, and showcased some of the many safe and sustainable multimodal transportation facilities around Washington DC that our members were involved in. The design of our cities is deeply influenced by our modes of transportation, for reference, 'Parking is covering up to 30% of our cities and collectively takes up about as much space as West Virginia'. Over the last six decades, as car usage has surged, so has the demand for parking. To address this growing need, post-World War II, municipalities began mandating that developers incorporate parking into their new structures. These regulations, or mandatory parking minimums, stipulate exact parking space requirements for each building – and providing these spaces is no small expense. Fairfax County has just approved updated parking requirements through their "Parking Reimagined" initiative. This revision to County ordinance includes reduced parking rates for particular uses (including retail, office, and fast food uses), reduced rates for uses located on transit routes, reduced rates for commercial redevelopment...and the list goes on. While not as drastic as some localities (who have struck out parking minimums altogether), this is a promising step in the right direction. Reduced parking mandates help to minimize a community's dependency on vehicular travel, reclaim areas for increased commercial investment, and minimize the visual blight created by seas of vacant parking lots. The area includes the Maitland High Street, a #sharedzone on High Street between Bourke and Elgin Streets. The area is a key public space in the historic Maitland CBD and was converted from a bustling retail street to a heritage #pedestrian 🚸 mall in 1988. 🎒🏫 The mapped area also covers the footpath network near the East Maitland Public School, St Joseph's Primary School, Maitland Grossmann High School, Saint John The Baptist Primary School, All Saints College Saint Mary's Campus, and Saint Peter's Campus. While I approve of your sentiments to free some urban areas from cars and parking needs and the CO2 that saves, you are not thinking elderly people’s needs or the needs of the disabled. We all age in different ways,some ending up healthier than others as we go through life, but longevity is here to stay and unless you can include easy transport, shopping, affordable housing, travel and entertainment ways that don’t require us all either to ride a bike or scooter or pay for urban taxis and internet and healthcare with scarce retirement funds you are not imagining the future correctly. Already many states are facing huge growths in the over 70 and 80 demographic and have made no effort to consider how they will support this group. You can’t shunt us all off to expensive retirement homes, or have ghettos of senior only housing.Urban design must plan for an urban scape with increasingly older people.

CASE STUDY Following our exhibiton at Road Expo Scotland, we wanted to shed some light on one of our case studies from north of the border - a key installation of parking signs at The Helix, Falkirk. The Helix was borne from an idea in 2003 to build an ecopark as part of the Falkirk Greenscape Initiative, transforming 350 hectares of land between Falkirk and Grangemouth. Today, The Helix connects 16 local communities through extensive path networks stretching over 27km. In the summer of 2005 Big Lottery launched its Living Landmarks fund, established to help communities improve their local environment. The partners behind My Future's in Falkirk submitted a bid on behalf of The Helix. Falkirk Council, Central Scotland Forest Trust and British Waterways Scotland (now Scottish Canals), with support from the project's conceptual designers, prepared a detailed masterplan for a unique outdoor greenspace. Falkirk Council were looking at options for digital road signage on the site. The signage would fundamentally display pricing for car parking. Having no constant power within the park, they enquired about a battery back-up option. The Coeval Solution Falkirk Council purchased a Single-colour LED matrix display with five LED matrix fields. This can display numbers and text in yellow, the front is covered with retroreflective foil class II. As there was no constant power for the connection to the signage, a battery with charger was used. The sign is connected to 220VAC mains power supply from the streetlight and the 55Ah battery is charged during the night. During the day, the sign is then powered by the battery. Falkirk Council also needed a way to change the car park fees on the signage remotely as the security office is slight distance from the sign. The sign display can be set/changed via SMS depending on the parking fee.
