Today marks my 1-year anniversary at Iron EagleX, Inc. I'm sharing my journey to help fellow veterans who find themselves in the throes of their own military transition. Here are some real thoughts on my experience, hoping to spark deeper conversations within yourself, your family, or even with me if you need more context.
After 20 years in the Air Force, I was set on leaving defense. I wanted out completely. Through a Hiring Our Heroes corporate fellowship, I found what I thought I wanted: a big company, a new industry, and a great compensation package to thoroughly stroke my ego (yep, said it). It was a brand new, intimidating world and I was "ready".
Despite having wonderful leaders, inspiring coworkers, and all the resources I needed, I missed the shared connection of military service. I underestimated how much I'd miss connecting with others whose backgrounds I understood...and who also understood mine. No, I didn't fly planes. No, I wasn't in the Army. No...ah, just forget it, let's move on.
As corporate things began to make more sense around me my "work" started to make less sense within me. I was certain that none of my "Pursue Your Purpose" responses from The COMMIT Foundation read, "make great money and feel no connection whatsoever to my work." The values misalignment became clear but who walks away from what they "wanted"? I kept on keepin' on, certain this was just part of me mourning a 24-year identity. I'd bury that "purpose" stuff soon and 🚀...
but then...
my role was eliminated not even a year after it was created.
RSUs reclaimed, severance paid, and handcuffs released, it was back to the job market with 4 seconds of "tech" experience and a defense-heavy resume that no recruiter in tech cared to read (nor did I care to spend the time translating 20 years of military-unique experiences to corporate equivalence that I know nothing about).
Then, I received a message from one of the most genuine humans you'll ever meet, Sebastian Lambert. Our conversation picked back up from where we left it a year earlier and this mission-driven IEX team team brought me back to my people, to my purpose.
If you're contemplating leaving defense, I get it—I've been there! I offer this perspective so you don't underestimate the importance of aligning with your purpose. If you do you might end up in tears during a corporate interview and begging the production team to save you from public embarrassment!
