Can you remember the first time you saw #music? 🎵 Today, on August 1, we're taking a moment to celebrate the anniversary of an event that redefined our relationship with music: the launch of #MTV in 1981. Growing up, I was always captivated by music's ability to tell a story, stir emotions, and bring people together. Then came along MTV, a channel that turned our auditory experiences into a visual feast. It was like seeing music come alive before our eyes. MTV's revolutionary concept changed the music industry forever. It introduced us to the power of music videos, made pop culture icons out of musicians, and provided a platform for artistic expression that transcended audio. For a music lover like me, it was a transformative experience that merged my love of music with a newfound passion for visual storytelling. Who can forget the thrill of seeing the debut of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' or the cultural phenomenon that Madonna's 'Like a Prayer' became? These moments are more than just milestones in music history; they're part of our collective cultural fabric. Fast forward to today, music videos continue to be a powerful medium for artists to communicate with their audience, thanks to MTV setting the stage 40 years ago. The music industry, and us fans, owe much to this innovative leap. So, as we celebrate this momentous anniversary, I'd love to ask: What was your first memorable music video? 🎬 #MTVAnniversary #MusicIndustry #MusicVideos #CulturalInnovation" https://lnkd.in/eWN8QPci

BIPOC THEATER NEWS: "...[the Broadway industry] has been slow to recover from Covid-19: Admissions totaling 12.3 million for the 2022-23 were nearly 17% lower than the record-breaking pre-pandemic levels of the 2018-19 season. The good news: Broadway audiences were more diverse than ever last season, with 29% of attendees identifying themselves as Black, Indigenous or People of Color. “60 Minutes.” MTV. “The Daily Show.” The future of some of America’s most recognized cultural icons is unknown as the fate of their owner, the Hollywood and media conglomerate Paramount Global, hangs in the balance. Paramount may be on the verge of being sold, its prospects uncertain. Maybe the possibility of its demise isn’t worth lamenting. Maybe we should just crown Netflix the new king of Hollywood. Perhaps the sources of our next cultural touchstones are to be found on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube, and not in the maze-like corridors of the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street or in Paramount Pictures’ 65-acre Melrose Avenue lot. Because Paramount Global’s ownership structure gives all power to its largest voting shareholder, the company’s future comes down to the whims of just one person: the 70-year-old heiress Shari Redstone.

New Post: The 15 Best Dance Albums of 2023: Staff Picks - https://lnkd.in/dhn3SrBa - Singles may be the lifeblood of the dance world, but albums are its beating heart — the projects on which artists offer worldviews, complete statements and the fullest sense of who they are, where they’re coming from and what they care about. Thus like dancing itself, an album is an intimate experience, especially when you listen closely. And 2023 was an exceptional year for the format: legends returned with refreshed ideas, new acts rose above the fray, newly solo artists defined themselves and altogether a barrage of resonant projects reminded us of the vast territory of sound that the dance/electronic genre covers. While tech house, house and techno continued ruling dancefloors worldwide, it’s hard to say any one sound defined the top albums of the year. There were throwbacks, there was ambient, there was drum ‘n’ bass, house, IDM, acid, pop dance and more. But the long-player format did give artists a chance to step back from the decks — where getting the crowd moving is the perpetual motivating force — and get into the studio to explore often softer and more experimental sounds, which might not be right for peaktime (or for radio crossover), but which still are part of the dance DNA. And while the Dance/Electronic Albums chart was largely dominated by old standbys in 2023, the way albums were transformed into the live setting helped contribute to one of the healthiest years for live dance events in recent memory. These are our 15 favorite dance albums of 2023, presented in alphabetical order by artist. - Download: Stupid Simple CMS - https://lnkd.in/g4y9XFgR

I’m thrilled to share exciting new research No Guarantees has commissioned in partnership with leading trends and generation research firm Culture Co-Op. The report explores what Gen Z and Millennials think about Broadway, examines the reasons they aren’t showing up, and suggests strategic steps the industry can take to cultivate new, engaged audiences. The research shows that Gen Z and Millennials’ lack of Broadway attendance is not due to details like a particular show’s cast, subject matter, or number of awards it has received. Instead, it’s a handful of deep misconceptions about Broadway itself, like confusion about ticket prices, the number of shows playing at any given time, access to tickets, and who Broadway is even meant for. The great news for Broadway is that while Gen Z & Millennials may not know much about individual shows or what’s happening in the theater industry, the Broadway brand remains extraordinarily strong. They are curious about us, and 91% even reported being more interested in Broadway simply by taking the survey! They’re ready to be brought into the fold. This gives all of us the ability to appeal to the existing interest of new, young audiences and develop a modern, actionable strategy to make it happen - to meet people where they really are. There’s so much to dive into so please check out the full report, which you can download at noguarantees.com. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, or ideas!

We love seeing this research being commissioned by the wonderful folx over at No Guarantees! Making sure that we know how to reach and speak to Millennial and Gen Z theater-goers is such a necessary piece of the puzzle to building a more expansive, inclusive, and sustainable future model for theater everywhere. A couple of points we found particularly interesting: 1. Gen Z and Millennials lack an awareness of the titles currently on Broadway. While this isn't the largest surprise, what was particularly shocking was that "In total, young people were more aware of shows that never existed than some of the most celebrated, award-winning productions, like Kimberly* Akimbo and Hadestown." 2. It is inspiring to hear that “85% agree, ‘Live entertainment is a place for me to unplug and tune into IRL’ and 83% say a big benefit of live events is socializing with friends…” Live events is still known to all as a useful community building tool, even to the next generation. We come away curious to know Gen Z and Millennials perspective on theater as a larger market in addition to Broadway. Do young people know more about touring productions in their areas? Regional theater? Community? What are the productions they are aware of at all, if any? Theater has an ability to specifically address the feelings of isolation and loneliness reported about in our youth population through creative expression and community. On top of that, the next generation of theater-makers are going to be culture definers, something with economic and market-defining potential. The most important question for us at Spectra is: how can we best meet them in the spaces that they occupy as digital natives?
