We're proud to be working with Conflict Sensitivity Facility (CSF) and USAID to bring the latest technological and scientific tools for the full Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of ecosystems to support food security, resilience, recovery and development where it is needed most. The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has plunged Sudan into a state of war with no areas unaffected. Farming and food production has been hit hard leading to a high risk of widespread famine. As the report shows, the agricultural system that existed prior to the conflict was highly centralised and led to persistent rural poverty, diminishing yields, environmental degradation, and resource-based conflict. 🌍 Exciting News! 🌍 Today, we're thrilled to announce a new partnership between CABI, ISRIC, FARA, and FAO aimed at establishing a "Continental Support Team" to advance soil information systems across Africa. Coordinated by FARA and aligning with African Union policies, this initiative will enhance National Soil Information Systems (SIS) development throughout the continent. We’re also launching the Framework for Sustainable National Soil Information Systems, developed by CABI and ISRIC with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This comprehensive framework integrates insights from the global soil data community, incorporating best practices and the FAIR data principles—ensuring that soil data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The MoU signing will take place at the CAADP PP meeting in October 2024, marking a significant step forward in advancing soil information systems in Africa. During the recent African Union summit, governments endorsed the 4th CAADP Biennial Review Report which highlights outcomes of different agricultural efforts and interventions on the continent to track, measure and report progress achieved from 49 countries. The Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (#CAADP) is a policy framework to help African countries #endhunger and #reducepoverty by raising economic growth through agriculture-led development. Through CAADP, African governments have agreed to allocate at least 10% of national budgets to agriculture and rural development, and to achieve agricultural growth rates of at least 6% per annum. Its most recent biennial review report finds that no country is currently on track to achieve the Malabo targets by 2025 - zero hunger, halving poverty, and boosting intra-African trade in agricultural commodities and services. These findings reflect the consequences of multiple global crises, from the lingering impact of COVID-19 to the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Zero Hunger Coalition is closely following the CAADP process and, in particular, the Post Malabo agenda which will be defined this year. 🌱 Advancing Climate Resilience: First NAP Working Group in KP 🌏 With German support, the Planning and Development Department recently hosted the first Working Group of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). During the session, presided over by the Chief Economist, NAP projects were showcased, and new partners were welcomed to enhance collaboration and coordination among development stakeholders. There was a commendation for the dedication shown by development partners. The Chief Economist urged continued support for the implementation of the NAP, suggesting the broadening of outreach efforts to communities across KP. 🤝Continued cooperation for enhancing climate resilience  On behalf of Germany, we are supporting the implementation of Pakistan's NAP, focusing on enhancing climate resilience in the country. 📢 Exciting news! I am super thrilled to share our newest publication in the East African Journal of Applied Science and Sustainable Development. Our article titled "Land and Conflict in Qardho District: Study of the Root causes and Solutions" delves into the root causes, effects, and potential solutions to the persistant challenges facing land managment and governance in the region. 🏡The study highlights the significance of bolstering government institutions in land governance and administration, as supported by 78.20% of respondents, aligning with previous research emphasizing effective policies and transferring land ownership to the government to mitigate land conflict in the Qardho district and Garowe city. 📚The study also reveals a strong consensus among respondents, with 49.37% identifying weak institutional capacity, particularly in land governance, as a major contributor to land conflict in Qardho, while 49.87% also acknowledge this weakness, reflecting the significant role of inadequate institutional capacity in driving land conflicts in the area, aligning closely with prior research on land and conflict dynamics in the country where inadequate governance poses a significant challenge for Somalia.
