What are your Sunday plans? I distributed food to 40 individuals today. Seeing smiles on these faces always makes my heart flutter. From a 1 year-old child to a 75 year-old senior citizen, we distribute healthy and nutritious meals to everyone on Sundays. Do you know what is the most heartwarming feeling? When they bless us with their blessings, and appreciate our work. At moments like these, we feel that Sachi Seva Foundation is doing a great work. Bombay, I will always have you. I think it’s called ‘The City of Dreams’ for a reason The first time I went to Bombay was during December 2022 I was the main character Because I got admission into my dream college, LSR, my parents’ business was doing well, and my grandfather was also alive Well now, he’s no more It’s been one month now since we lost him And nothing can justify this loss I have still not gotten used to his absence Like for dinner, I sometimes still keep five plates on the table Only to realise to reduce it to 4 Sometimes, I go into his room to ask for a change of Rs.500 Only to realise he’s not there He never travelled much in his life But he always wanted me to have those experiences I know I will fulfill his wishes I will experience all the adventures I will become successful, travel the world, make mistakes, and do everything that life has to offer But here’s a twist - I will be doing these things with a void The void of losing him. If I could, I would’ve travelled Bombay with you I would have explored my favourite city with you But is there any point of dwelling on the ifs and buts now? Are society PORs the ultimate jackpot? Standing for elections or appearing in those interviews, group discussions necessary? Being a society member, or position holder is definitely advantageous It’s good for your network, your popularity, and your soft skills It’s definitely an accelerator of your growth But not the only path of growth Not being a part of any society doesn’t limit your growth You just need to find other avenues in/outside your college to make things work As a third year student at LSR, I have been: → A position holder, and → A core team member of different societies. Do I see any difference in my growth? YES. But I’m confident that I would’ve achieved this (and more) if I hadn’t been a member of either of them. At the end, it all boils down to three things: → Grit → Passion → Dedication To all the college students who are reading this: EXPERIENCE and EXPERIMENT That’s the only way you will find out what works for you. Served food to 50 individuals today My collective, Sachi Seva Foundation gives back to the community every Sunday I have been working in the impact space since I was 17 years And I haven’t earned a single penny from here. Still people ask me why do I do it? Because I love it. Also because I am a Sikh and my religion teaches me the value of sewa (helping others) Community kitchen, philanthropy, and charity is something that Sikhism is very synonymous to. I just act as a mediator to extend that message by doing my bit. Why aren’t we giving the attention to Paralympics that it deserves? Why don’t people consider it a “real sport”? The answer lies in our HYPOCRISY. We have developed a two-faced attitude when it comes to talking about things that deserve more importance The Indian contingent broke the record yesterday by winning eights medals in a day 🏅 India ranks at 15th position now with 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 7 bronze medals. Mind you, this performance is better than Paris Olympics 2024 I’m not discrediting the performance of our athletes at the Paris Olympics at all But these things don’t deserve our TOKENISTIC representation For instance, let’s talk about Sheetal Devi, who won a bronze in archery She was born with phocomelia syndrome, a rare condition that forced her to shoot with her legs, shoulders, and jaw. Or Nitesh Kumar, who clinched India’s second gold medal in badminton. His left leg was damaged during a college trip in 2009 which forced him to depend upon prosthetics. What defines a good friendship? → Hitting the gym together? → Attending concerts together? → Sharing secrets? For me, it’s about having someone who supports me at my lowest. When I hit rock bottom, feel insecure, and my world seems to be crashing down I want you to hold me. My life changed at 12:10 PM on August 31, 2024. This was the moment I lost my Daddu (my paternal grandfather) It felt like someone had smashed a brick into my face. Panic-stricken, I didn’t know what to do. Tears rolled down my face, and I found it difficult to breathe. I started calling my family members to inform them about the tragedy. I also reached out to three of my friends; two of them picked up the call while the last one didn’t. They assured me that they were by my side and that I could cry for as long as I needed. The third friend learned about the incident but chose not to call me back or text me. Now, I am grieving the loss of two things: → My grandfather → My friendship with them I have never felt so dejected and disappointed in my entire life as I did that day. The choice to remain ignorant in such a critical moment is something that I cannot fathom. It’s beyond my understanding. Things I learnt as a 20 year old (Brown household edition) 1. You have to be selfish without harming anyone. 2. Respect your goals, your ambitions, and your dreams. 3. Set clear boundaries and learn to say NO. 4. Question patriarchy. It doesn’t matter if it stems from your parents, or your grandparents. Make them unlearn. 5. Cut-off toxic friendships and relationships from your life. 6. Cooking and cleaning is a basic skill that everyone should know (irrespective of gender) 7. Gender is a social construct. Men shouldn’t be burdened of being the sole bread owner and women shouldn’t look after children alone. Share the responsibilities. 8. We need feminism. It’s not about hating men but the equality of all genders. 9. Financial Independence is important. It is the enabler of your freedom and gives you the ability to get out of that abusive marriage/relationship. 10. This is for all the women: never be dependent on any man. Learn everything from driving to filing taxes. Make yourself self-sufficient. #family #learnings #life #experiences
