During his interview on The Internal Comms Podcast with Katie Macaulay, Audacity founder Jason Anthoine spoke about a conversation he had with his father that sparked his lifelong passion for employee engagement. The employees at the school bus factory where Jason's father worked were organizing a union. When Jason asked why, his dad responded, "Those employees who work there, they just want someone to listen to them and care about them, and they don’t feel like either one of those things is happening." There can be many complex things, from economic climates and leadership decisions to concerns about benefits and pay, that influence an employee's overall satisfaction with his job. But at the end of each day, employees just want to feel like their contribution to their employer means something and that their value is great enough to compel the company to care about them. If their concerns are never considered or their feedback is never welcomed, they will feel like they're disposable to the company. That unsettling feeling breeds resentment and stress. But if the leaders of the company started making an effort to reach out, to listen, and to communicate with their employees like teammates instead of subordinates, the entire culture could shift. Those same employees will start showing up ready to do their best because they know it matters. They know they matter. Making sure they know that is the first step to building trust in the workplace. While there are many best practices around how to make this shift, just starting is more important than doing it perfectly.
