This June, the next Living Wage and Living Income Summit will take place.   To make real strides towards living wages and living income in global value chains IDH, GIZ, and with sponsorship from the UN Global Compact, will bring together over 400 key actors from the private and public sector, including producers, buyers, unions and more, to effect change through responsible business practices, policy instruments, and social dialogue.   We have seen steps of progress to address living wage and living income gaps through joint public and private sector actions, engagement by producers and buyers, and social dialogue and collective bargaining. The topics are also being embraced by due diligence regulation and multilateral organisations. We need to debate how best to benefit from recent milestones achieved by organisations like the ILO and the EU. We need to foster dialogue and share practical insights on what works when it comes to closing of living wage and income gaps. We need to share different perspectives from the supply chain on these topics. We believe that living wages and incomes are essential to achieving sustainable economic development. At the next Living Wage and Living Income Summit 2024 we will make strides towards a future with fairer value chains. UEBT is part of the Global Living Wage Coalition that is celebrating a decade of work helping move the idea of #livingwages from niche to norm. This progress can be seen in recent developments like the International Labour Organization (ILO) recent milestone agreement on living wages, which raises hopes for millions of workers around the world that decent wages could become a reality. It can also be seen in the discussions from leading companies across sectors, who are either contemplating or committing to pay living wages to workers in their #supplychains. UEBT supports companies to achieve living wages. We do this by helping companies to understand the gap between the current situation and living wages, and with this information, companies can develop strategies to promote better livelihoods for producers and workers. In the GLWC's recent statement, we as a group pause to consider what it took for this idea to take root and we look to the future, discussing what it will take to bring about the GLWC vision of a world where wages uphold the dignity of labour. The fight for living wages requires a united front, and the Living Wage & Living Income Summit, 26 June 2024 in Amsterdam, brings together key decision-makers from across the public and private sectors. The B4IG Coalition accelerate action on the living wage. In today’s context of recurring crises and growing inequalities, addressing living wages is more necessary than ever as many workers find that being employed does not give them and their families a way out of poverty. Inflation has highlighted how crucial businesses are to ensuring a decent quality of living and acting as a catalyst in eradicating poverty. Recent studies have reinforced the case for the living wage by demonstrating its benefits for companies, including fostering a more motivated and productive workforce, and reducing staff turnover rates. B4IG is now entering a new phase. In addition to helping companies advance on the living wage by sharing best practices and knowledge to foster engagement and education, we also recognise that a key aspect of the journey is about individual companies taking action. It is about companies working to identify the gap towards a living wage in their organisations and making a commitment to provide a living wage not only to their own employees, but also to ensure that workers in their supply chains can also have access to living wages as an essential component of decent work. The coalition collectively welcomes the Forward Faster campaign launched by the United Nations Global Compact as a step in the right direction for companies to advance living wages and incomes in their own operations and supply chains. As such, we encourage our member companies and beyond to commit to the proposed targets. Living Wage week this year is 13-17 November and Anderson Lloyd are one of New Zealand's accredited Living Wage Employers.   Leading the way in 2019, Anderson Lloyd was the first large New Zealand law firm (and one of the country’s first professional businesses) to become a certified Living Wage Employer, which extends to our suppliers, graduates and summer clerks.   The Living Wage emerged as a response to growing poverty and inequality that continues to hold back so many Kiwi workers, their families and our economy. The Living Wage is the hourly wage a worker in New Zealand needs, to pay for the necessities of life and participate as an active citizen in the community. It reflects the basic expenses of workers and their families such as food, transportation, housing and childcare, and is calculated independently each year.   The living wage hourly rate recently increased to $26.00 on September 1, 2023. According to the International Labour Organization, more than a billion workers around the world do not earn enough to afford a decent standard of living, including sufficient food, housing, education, health care, and other essential needs.  Healthy markets and a dynamic business environment require companies providing fair compensation for decent work. A living wage not only provides a decent standard of living for workers and families, but it also empowers them as consumers and contributors to the economy. To support companies’ efforts to secure living wages for workers, IDH developed the Living Wage Roadmap.
