Uniformity in bulk material handling pertains to the consistency in particle size and shape within a bulk solid. This factor plays a crucial role in the flowability of materials, impacting their ease of movement. Picture attempting to funnel a mix of soccer balls, marbles, and sand. Varying particle sizes would likely lead to obstructions and irregular flow. On the other hand, a uniform sack of marbles or sand would flow seamlessly. This analogy underscores how achieving uniformity can optimize material handling processes. Digging deeper, material uniformity is commonly assessed by its particle size distribution using screen sizes that permit 60% and 10% of a sample to pass through. A lower uniformity value indicates smoother material flow due to increased uniformity. Take, for instance, the handling of granular fertilizers in the industry. GRAINAR Hello colleagues and friends! ๐ Today, I would like to share something with you that I think you will find interesting ๐ค and potentially useful , especially if you are a #miller ๐พ. The majority of millers believe that applying moisture ๐ฆ to wheat prior to milling toughens the bran. However, interesting data ๐ and study findings ๐ have shown that the bran actually becomes more extensible ๐พโก๏ธ๐งฒ. This allows it to be separated from the endosperm in larger pieces ๐. Let's quickly review the subject๐: 1. Millers apply moisture treatment or conditioning ๐ฟ๐ง to enhance the milling process. This involves two stages: first applying moisture and then allowing a period for resting. 2. This method is thought to lead to 'bran toughening,' ๐พโก๏ธ๐ which helps in better separating bran from the endosperm during milling. As a result, bran is recovered in larger pieces, and there are fewer tiny bran fragments in the flour. 3. The mechanical properties of wheat's outer layers change significantly with varying moisture levels. ๐ฆ๐พ ๐น #Studies show that bran conditioned at 100% relative humidity showed a significantly higher maximum tensile strain before breaking compared to bran at 45% humidity, while the energy needed for breaking remained the same. This suggests that bran becomes more flexible and less brittle with higher moisture levels. ๐ช๐ฌ ๐น Also, #Data show that the mechanical properties of wheat bran change more noticeably between moisture levels of 14% and 18% compared to between 6% and 14%. This observation is in line with the practical experience of millers who increase grain moisture to about 17% during tempering. ๐พ๐ง๐ โ The increase in moisture doesn't make the bran tougher but rather more extendable, leading to larger bran particles after milling. I am back to the studies and reviewing some information about grain storage, i found a video has been a great help at visualizing the process. Below the processes in the video: 1. Grain receiving - Trucks or gondolas unload grain into a parking space with drag chain conveyors that will convey the grain into the bucket chain conveyor which will provide elevation head to the grain. This will allow grain to fall into the cleaner without the use of additional material handling equipment. 2. Cleaning - It filters out dust or other unwanted particles such as small rocks. 3. Buffer silo - This allows grain to be temporarily stored or for buffering before entering the dryer. 4. Dryer - Moisture content in grain will lead to faster decomposition of grains inside a storage due to bacterial growth or could cause the grains to mature. The grains are heated using a heat exchanger to remove the moisture in the grains 5. Final storage - Grains are then stored in grain silos which can hold them for up to 12 months until demand is needed. 6. Filtering - Final filtering is made for grain before it is loaded into transport. 7. Loading - In the video, the gondola receives grain from the storage silos for distribution or for consumption. https://lnkd.in/eWt4h4C2
