City Leadership approved Winston-Salem’s updated Language Access Plan in July 2024. Staff input, community feedback, and further data analysis informed the City plan to coordinate the translation of all vital documents into Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL). The plan also responds to growing and recently arrived refugee populations by translating emergency messages into an additional 7 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, Karenni, Pashto, and Swahili). The plan was developed together with World Relief Triad as part of BIC’s Local Government Language Access Collaborative. World Relief will continue working with the City to identify and provide support to interpreters and translators. Mixing language, culture and automation can yield byproducts like this... “The stakes for getting #translations right can be grave for asylum seekers filling out applications. “One of the things that we see frequently is pointing to small technicalities on asylum applications. … That’s why you need human attentiveness. That is particularly true for work with #Afghanrefugees who speak #Pashto and #Dari — #languages native to tens of millions of Afghans around the world. … #AIlanguagetools for Pashto have lagged behind more #dominantlanguages like English and Mandarin. The latter are considered “high-resource” languages, with a large amount of texts available online compared to a language like Pashto. It is difficult to say how prevalent #machinetranslation is in the #immigration system, but there’s clear evidence it is being used. … Seemingly trivial #translationerrors can sometimes lead to harmful distortions when drafting #asylumapplications. “[Machine translation] doesn’t have a #culturalawareness. Especially if you’re doing things like a personal statement that’s handwritten by someone. …. The person might not be perfect at writing, and also might use metaphors, might use idioms, turns of phrases that if you take literally, don’t make any sense at all.” #minoritylanguages #endangeredlanguages https://lnkd.in/gewcv42W

Author for multilingual children specialising in Multilingual Literacy - Founder of the Library 4 Multilinguals - Ambassador at PEaCH Project - Teacher of French & Spanish
Working with translators. A BIG CHALLENGE in the creation of my series empowering multilingual teens has been to coordinate the translation of 3 books in 6 languages. I largely UNDERestimated the amount of work this would represent, but I have ABSOLUTELY LOVED the process and the discussions to adapt each version to each culture. Here are some of the discussions we've had: Technical ones: 🇯🇵 The kanji (Chinese characters) can be accompanied by furigana to help children know how to read/pronounce them. We had to work out how much to include. 🇩🇪🇳🇱 Sentences in Dutch and German can be significantly longer than in English. We therefore had discussions about what to cut out etc. Some about the choice of words: 🇯🇵 Would a 14 y.o girl call her mum ママ(mama) or お母さん(okaasan)? 🇮🇹 In English, there is one term "multilingual" but in Italian (and French) there are 2 terms that are used, even though most people mainly use "multilingue" or use them interchangeably. We a very interesting conversation around all that. Cultural adaptations: 🇫🇷🇮🇹🇳🇱🇩🇪🇯🇵 What I enjoyed the most was thinking of equivalent of games depending on the language and/or culture the book was translated in, when translating "My Multilingual Diary" I created this series EMPOWERING MULTILINGUAL (PRE-)TEENS based on what would have helped me as a multilingual and multicultural teen, AND by thinking about how to make sure my sons and every multilingual children in the world have tools that help them both - see all the benefits of being multilingual and multicultural and - do not suffer as much from the challenges they might be confronted to. I truly hope it bring value to all our our multilingual children and students 🙏 Thank you to all the translators who have been helping me share these books with more multilingual children ❤️ If you wish to get these books, head over to Amazon. ✪ I provide simple and clear translations for CALD communities ✪ NAATI translations ✪ Translation Company in Australia
Translating community health documents for refugees, migrants and asylum seekers involves considering a wide range of languages. The main languages spoken by last year's refugee entrants were Arabic, Dari, Hazagari, Farsi, Burmese, Tamil, Tigrinya, Oromo, Tibetan, Bosnian, Turlkish, and Chinese. https://bit.ly/44U6Kok With such linguistic diversity, it's important to reach newcomers effectively about accessing essential community and health services. There are also variations in languages and cultures within the same country's refugee population, which must be considered during translation. Sometimes, direct word-for-word translations may not work, so it's best to use commonly understood terms, even if they may sound unusual. To ensure accurate translations and neutral language, it's vital to follow a well-structured process that involves a diverse team of linguists and community representatives when translating for different communities. #SoniaSanchezMoreno #culturaldiversity #Translation #CommunityEngagement #HealthPromotion
