Why are companies including data engineering activities in data science job descriptions? Specialization and division of labor drive productivity, so if a company is hybridizing their roles, it suggests: - They have strong DE needs but weak DS aspirations. You’re likely to see this in smaller (< $500M ARR) non-tech companies who aren’t very DS mature. For example, they may know they need DE piping in place before trying DS, but want to double dip before doubling down on DS. The reasons vary, but are usually related to a fear/doubt there’ll be enough demand/value from a DS specialist to warrant a FTE. - They don’t have a lot of traditional DS work. They know DS is valuable in limited contexts, but haven’t identified enough use cases or established the value chains that make the business dependent on a FTE yet. Similar to #1, hybridizing the role lets them extract value from their DE chops while exploring DS use cases. - They don’t know what traditional DS work is. On the extreme end, they may think they’re hiring for a DE or DS, but don’t actually know what they’re looking for so skills for both get added to the job description. There are variations to my answer, but I think this covers the fundamentals.
