Design Manager I Senior Designer at Tensar, a division of CMC| Team Leader | Geotechnical Engineer | Design Bridge Manager
The world is constantly changing. This can also be seen in engineering. I believe that the ecological aspect of the use of geosynthetics will become increasingly important in a world where existing deposits of so-called natural materials are being depleted. A very interesting and recommendable article.
Sustainable infrastructure emphasises the efficient use of finite resources, as well as the evaluation of the long-term economic, social, and environmental (ESE) impact of modern civil engineering projects. It is now widely accepted that the movement towards more eco-friendly infrastructure will play a pivotal role in tackling the climate crisis and delivering a lower carbon future – yet less well known is the value of geosynthetics in helping us to design and construct more environmentally friendly solutions. Afcons Infrastructure Ltd: Pioneering India's First Undersea Rail Tunnel. India is on the brink of a monumental achievement with its first undersea rail tunnel, part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. This project highlights the country's engineering prowess and commitment to sustainable development, led by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, renowned for its expertise in complex underground projects. Project Overview Spanning 21 kilometers, the tunnel includes a 7-kilometer section under Thane Creek, home to the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS), a Ramsar Site since August 2022. The tunnel’s design minimizes disruption to the sanctuary’s flamingos and mangroves. Engineering Feats and Challenges Largest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM): Afcons will deploy India’s largest TBM, with a diameter of 13.1 meters, surpassing previous projects like the Mumbai Coastal Road. This TBM will navigate challenging urban terrain and Thane Creek. Depth and Scale: Constructed at depths of 25 to 65 meters below ground, the deepest point reaches 114 meters below Parsik Hill. These conditions present challenges, including high water pressure and significant overburden. Experience in Underwater Tunneling: Afcons draws from its successful construction of underwater Metro tunnels under Kolkata’s Hooghly River, equipping it with the expertise to handle the complexities of the undersea rail tunnel. Advanced Techniques: The project will use both TBMs and the New Austrian Tunnelling Methodology (NATM) for different sections, with 16 kilometers executed using TBMs and 5 kilometers leveraging NATM for its adaptability to varying geological conditions. Economic and Environmental Impact Cost Implications: Costs have escalated from Rs 100 crore to Rs 10,000 crore, reflecting the project's complexity and scale. Environmental Preservation: The tunnel’s alignment through Thane Creek aims to protect the TCFS’s biodiversity. Constructing the tunnel underwater minimizes ecological impact, preserving the sanctuary’s integrity. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail's undersea tunnel stands as a testament to engineering excellence and a model for future projects that balance development with environmental conservation. As the project progresses, it sets new benchmarks in India’s infrastructural landscape, reinforcing the country’s position as a leader in innovative engineering solutions.
