The 2023 European Deep Tech Report by Lakestar, Walden Catalyst Ventures and Dealroom.co is out. Thanks for including me Lukas Leitner and Steven Jacobs in this exciting work. My takeaways: 1️⃣ Deeptech funding in 2023 is almost on par with 2022 (-7%) whereas funding in Regular Tech is down by -46%. This shows the continued (or relatively growing) interest of the broader VC sector in Deeptech. 2️⃣ Investments into my favorite topic, Future of Computing, reached record levels in 2023 driven by the immense growth in demand for computational power and the increase in next-generation technologies like #quantumcomputing and #aichips. Verve Ventures is one of the most active European investors in this topic. 3️⃣ ETH Zürich leads the charts in terms of spin-out value. DYK: Networks can have a greater impact on R&D than centralized companies? In a recent comparison between Alphabet and Y Combinator, the network (Y Combinator) had a dramatically higher impact on R&D and tech. Deeptech doesn't care whether you are a bit or an atom. A cathedral of code or a convoluted physical device. As long, of course, as the innovative solution is based on bleeding-edge tech, defensible IP, and complex engineering. It so happens that Jolt Capital's portfolio shows an even distribution between software-based and hardware-based products and services. We get the dyed-in-the-wool pure players on both ends of the spectrum. We do a lot of events throughout the year, more than 20, in fact. Most of these are large events which involve months and months of planning. Each one is special and has its own vibe, its own excitement. But there was just something about Deep Tech Connect, which we organized with ecosystem partner HighTechXL, in only six weeks. There was a new level of excitement, a whole new level of deep tech players, and they were SERIOUSLY connecting at the sold-out event. There were impact investors and deep-tech startups, economic development folks, government representatives and tech experts from corporates of all sizes. The elusive Peter Wennink, CEO of ASML, Europe’s most valuable tech company, delivered the keynote address. The audience hung on every word. The theme of the day was connecting, and according to participant feedback, emails were pinging, calendars were syncing and conversations were sparking across the entire High Tech Campus Eindhoven.
