➡️ 🚢 LNG Imports by Market: IGU World LNG Report 2024 Japan lost the top spot to China but remained the second-largest importer. South Korea maintained its position as the third-largest importer. Both markets experienced similar dynamics in 2023, with increased availability of coal and nuclear generation capacities, serving as alternatives to LNG. India rose to become the fourth-largest importer, driven by prices falling below $10 per MMBtu, which attracted many Indian importers back to the spot market. France dropped to the fifth-largest importer due to higher availability of competing power sources such as nuclear and renewables, reducing the need for LNG. I had an old 3D model of an LNG tank stored in my cloud, so I decided to repurpose it to create infographics in the Visual Capitalist style, in time with the release of the International Gas Union 2024 World LNG Report. 🇦🇺Australia May Reduce Its Presence in the LNG Market Australian LNG producers may not be able to compete with the US and Qatar, according to Offshore-Technology. From 2024 to 2028, global LNG supply is expected to grow by 40% due to new capacity in the US and Qatar. Meanwhile, demand for liquefied methane in the markets of developed countries will start to decline due to their return to nuclear generation. LNG consumption in Europe will peak in 2025. Demand in Japan has already fallen 25% since 2014 and is projected to fall another 25% by 2030. South Korea has already reduced consumption by 5%, and this process is expected to continue until 2030. Asian markets will not be able to compensate for these losses, as they are very dependent on rising LPG methane prices and prefer cheaper suppliers. Although in July last year, 75% of Australian LNG was shipped to Asia. Meanwhile, most long-term supply contracts with Australian plants expire after 2030. Their future prospects are dim, as many cheaper supplies have become available. #Australia #LNG

Since last several months LNG was being purchased only from Qatar, prices of which are related to Brent crude prices. Rupees value has appreciated also. Hence LNG prices should be going downwards. How come LNG based generation has become expensive. Our burecracy are bent on bringing bad name to current government & COAS General Asim Munir by increasing electricity prices every month. Where is cheap nuclear, cheap hydro & cheap Thar coal? All these sources should lower electricity "basket" prices. But contrary is happening.

TOKYO, July 12 - Japanese companies foreseeing a growing surplus in stocks of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as their demand for the fuel wanes in coming years, are scrambling to invest in regional markets to provide potential outlets to sell the gas. As more nuclear plants restart and renewable energy gains momentum, Japan's LNG imports are at their lowest in over a decade, spurring companies to turn to Asia to unload supplies contracted during past market shocks, such as Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Current Market Drivers: ⭐ Day-ahead contracts could see some continued downside with wind generation set to remain high and temperature set to pick up into tomorrow, providing some bearish pressure on both power and gas. 🌬 The UK is expected to see two LNG cargoes arrive over the next week or so, while North West Europe has an many more scheduled to arrive, providing some downside to near-curve contracts. 💡 The Heysham 2-7 nuclear reactor has scheduled one month of maintenance at the start of May-24, which might reduce any possible downside seen today in the May gas and power contracts. ⚡ After Freeport LNG train 3 tripped last week, feedgas flows into the facility are indicated to have ramped up over the weekend signalling a possible restart in export production, applying some bearish sentiment to the near-curve. 📢 Brent crude prices fell today, erasing the gains from Friday as Israel-Hamas peace talks in Cairo have paused fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East, while US inflation data has further dimmed the prospects of interest rate cuts. Data from ICE show (see chart below) net-long positions on European #gas futures has ramped dramatically to a level not seen since a month before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Wholesale #power prices have eased as the energy crisis faded from the panicked switch to #lng but remain elevated in 2024 as gas benchmarks are still about 50% higher than their 2017-21 average. That said, its difficult to see a scenario where LNG deliveries from the US and the Middle East could under-cut cheap Russian #gas piped to European demand hubs. Gas fired #power plants are still setting marginal pricing in most European markets in addition to peaking and balancing costs despite a recovery in French low variable-cost #nuclear and Nordic #hydropower output. With record temperatures witnessed in key Asian and Latin American LNG dependent markets, Europeans face stiff competition for deliveries meaning the opportunity to return to pre-2021 pricing from Russian piped #gas is gone. Power price volatility at elevated levels is the new norm until grids are fully #decarbonised. #hedging #commodity #risk
