The Science Based Targets initiative has approved Dechra’s near term science-based emissions reduction targets! The SBTi's Target Validation Team has classified our near term target ambition and has determined that it is in line with a 1.5°C trajectory, currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process. With this approval, we commit to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year calculation. It also means that we commit to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions 51.6% per GBP value added within the same timeframe. What's our next step in driving climate action? We have also recently submitted our long term targets, which aim to achieve at least 90% greenhouse gas emission reduction and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. We anticipate approval in early 2024 – watch this space! We are proving our commitment to building a sustainable future, by letting the science dictate our course of action with #ScienceBasedTargets. #SBTi

Taking a more aggressive stand than the rest of the world, the European Parliament has ✅ approved a new rule that will phase out the use of #HFCs in the EU by 2050 and reduce the EU-wide quota for these f-gases between 2024 and 2049. 🌍 The rule also introduces specific 🚫 phase-out dates for the use of f-gases in sectors where alternatives are “technologically and ecologically feasible,” such as in domestic refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps. 🎉 Celebrating the EU F-gas vote in the Parliament on Instagram, MEP Bas Eickhout said that “The law is not only a big win for the climate, but is also good for Europe’s competitiveness. We are now clear to the market: switch to clean alternatives. This is not only crucial for the climate, but also good for the European industry, which can stay at the forefront of the production of clean products. It’s nice in that respect that ATMOsphere gives me this award [ATMOsphere Person of the Year 2023]. It shows that climate policy doesn’t have to get in the way of the industry, but rather can empower each other.” The final publication of the revised EU F-gas Regulation in the Official Journal of the European Union is expected in March 2024. Calling for tech-neutrality in the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (#CRCF) AirMiners is joining 16 leading organisations representing the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) ecosystem who have gathered to express their concern around recent developments within the European Parliament´s ENVI Committee that seem to limit the scope of the CRCF in a potentially very damaging way. In particular, suggested changes to Article 2, paragraph 1, a & g, as well as Article 6 would de facto exclude most permanent CDR solutions from qualifying under the CRCF´s permanent storage requirement. This would significantly reduce the EU´s ability to achieve its climate targets and risk stunting innovation in carbon removal. As such, we are publishing a letter expressing our concerns and suggesting a solution which we hope will be considered by ENVI prior to finalising its position on this file in the coming days. #cop28 #climatepolicy #co2emissions #energypolicy #geopolitics Mission impossible Between 1990 and 2019 CO2 emissions rose from 35 to 53 GtCO2eq. Despite the pandemic and energy crisis, current emission levels have exceeded 54 GtCO2eq. In order to achieve the 2°C global warming target, CO2 emissions in 2030 must not surpass 39 GtCO2eq (-46%). Furthermore, to meet the more rigorous standard set out in the Paris Agreement ( 1.5°C relative to the pre-industrial period), the limit drops to 30 GtCO2eq (-55%). The Accord's member nations have committed to reducing emissions #ndcs , but their current commitments suggest that global emissions will range from 48 to 55 GtCO2eq by 2030. Therefore, according to the United Nations' assessment (#un ), global temperatures are expected to increase by approximately 3°C in this century. In the worst-case scenario, emissions responsible for climate change may increase by 5% in 2030, while in the best-case scenario, they may only decrease by 9%. To achieve a favorable reversal in climate, COP28 would need to make extremely vigorous resolutions that are unlikely to be implemented given the current state of economic and geopolitical interests
