"The global dairy sector is contributing to nutrition of girls and women, to their livelihoods and socio-economic progress, as well as their education. Milk and dairy foods improve nutrition of girls and women at different stages of their lives. Women dairy farmers around the world are acquiring financial autonomy (revenue, owning animals and land), which will contribute to their children's education and a proper housing. Women in the dairy sector are empowered by accessing to leadership and governance positions" said International Dairy Federation Director General, Laurence Rycken, at her presentation, "Recognizing and strengthening the role of women in Global dairy sector", during the IDF Regional Dairy Conference Asia- Pacific in Kochi, Kerala, India.

Happy #InternationalWomensDay! Today, let's celebrate the remarkable women who are the backbone of India's agricultural sector.
Did you know? Women contribute a staggering 55-80% of the total agricultural labor in India [𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦: 𝘛𝘠𝘔 - 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘦].
They toil tirelessly in every step of the process, from planting and weeding to harvesting and managing livestock. Despite their immense contribution, women often face challenges in land ownership, access to resources, and recognition for their hard work.

🌍🌱Women at the Heart of India’s Agricultural Policy
🌍🌱Causes of Feminization of Indian Agriculture:
😊Gender-Division of Work: Women's willingness for low-paid irregular work and perceived docility make them preferred for certain roles.
🌾Social Mobility and Migration - Reserved for Males: Men, considered breadwinners, migrate for better jobs, leaving women responsible for household chores and agriculture.
🌾Poverty: Women work as agricultural or domestic laborers to supplement family income due to poverty
👁️👁️Impacts of Feminization of Agriculture on Women:
🫴Work Overload: With male out-migration, women manage both family care and agricultural labor.
🫴Socio-Cultural Isolation: Women undertaking male roles face societal disapproval.
Insufficient Time for Child Rearing: 🫴Increased responsibilities reduce time for child care.
🫴Mental Health Issues: Spousal separation and increased duties may lead to mental health problems for women.
🧕Women’s Participation in Natural Farming:
🌺Empowerment: Involvement in natural farming can boost women’s incomes and decision-making roles.
🌺Effective Natural Farming: Women’s familiarity with nurturing aspects makes them early adopters of natural farming.
🌺Biodiversity Management: Women play a crucial role in conserving traditional practices in agriculture.
💐Example - Andhra Pradesh Community-Managed Natural Farming (APCNF):
💐Engaging Women: Utilizing women’s Self-Help Groups has improved nutrition, income, and empowered women.
Approach Moving Forward:
🪴Social Security: A robust support system is crucial for women juggling multiple responsibilities.
🍄Farm Ownership to Women: Identifying women as farmers and providing them with land ownership is essential.
🍁Recognizing Contribution: Inclusive policies recognizing women's contribution are needed.
🌲Gender Budgeting: Allocation of resources should ensure gender mainstreaming.
🏵️Inclusion in Planning: Involving local women in planning for agriculture can introduce an equity lens.

Celebrate #IWD2024 with remarkable stories of women champion farmers 👩🌾
Women play a crucial role in #agriculture and significantly contribute to the #foodsystem on various fronts. As primary caregivers and nurturers within households, they often manage crucial tasks related to food production, processing, and distribution. In many parts of the world, women are extensively involved in farming activities, tending to crops and livestock, and ensuring #foodsecurity for their families and communities. Amidst the challenges confronting the agricultural sector, it becomes imperative to involve women and leverage their social networks to propel the transformation of global food systems.
Through the Indo-German Technical Cooperation Project Support to Agroecological Transformation Processes in India (SuATI), we emphasise the importance of Gender Transformative Approaches in agri-food systems transformation. The project strives to celebrate and promote the inspiring stories of spirited champion farmers, women groups, and their federations in the realm of #agroecology and natural farming.
The Coffee Table Book showcases the diverse experiences of #womenfarmers across the country. These women are not only role models but also catalysts for change in the agricultural landscape. We invite you to immerse yourself in their stories, each one a testament to resilience, innovation, and empowerment.

The prevalent imagination of a ‘farmer’ in our society is overwhelmingly a dhoti clad male toiling in the agriculture fields. Notwithstanding the fact that women are the foundation of agriculture sector across the globe but are still playing an invisible role.
Farm women are an increasing share of agricultural workers globally, constituting 43% of global agriculture laborers, two-thirds of working women in south Asia are employed in agriculture.
Lack of effective and formal ownership of resources and productive assets coupled with gendered division of roles usually hold back women from claiming equal space in the realm of economic activities.
The contribution of women is essential to ensure the survival of agriculture. That is why at #Corteva, we encourage the inclusion and integration of women. By supporting them with necessary tools, resources and agronomy support to advance climate positive agriculture
On #InternationalDayofRuralWomen sharing here how we at Corteva work with farmers like Pramila Devi and Rani Devi and help them as they become active agents of socio-economic change.

Feminisation of agriculture is a way to combat the effect of climate change on food security.
Loaded statement?
Not really!
Female farmers are vital to food security.
Food security is closely connected with climate action.
In that sense, female farmers are catalysts for positive climate action.
Now, let's see some numbers -
👉 The sowing and harvesting time in India sees female farmers spending close to 3300 hours compared to their male counterparts who spend 1860 hours (OXFAM data).
So she can optimise the yield for greater output?
👉 820 million undernourished people worldwide are in developing countries, where women play a crucial role in food production (FAO data). Removing gender-specific obstacles in agriculture could significantly empower women and increase global food security.
By providing women with the same resources and education as men, their food production could rise by up to 30%, potentially eradicating hunger for 150 million people.
These are just two data points, but the essence is the same.
Empowering female farmers through land ownership, financing, markets, access to learning and resources creates a just environment for agriculture.
An agriculture system that thrives on holistic ownership that women bring leads to optimized yields and higher productivity.
In essence, empowering female farmers leads to climate resilience in food systems.

Women are the core keeper of rural life momentum. On their day #RuralWomen's Day, She Feeds the World Egypt (SFtW Egypt) celebrates rural women and their contribution to lead change, advance equality, and strengthen resilience.
SFtW Egypt recognizes the vital role that women small-scale producers play in global food production and empowers them to access the resources, support, information, technologies, skills and confidence they need to invest in their farms, businesses, families and communities. As a result, women boost production and generate income that they use to send their children to school, feed their families more nutritious meals, keep their kids and family members healthy, expand their businesses and employ others, and build savings that help them during tough times.
SFtW’s Egypt Enhanced women's empowerment by:
1. More than 12,000 rural women project participants were enrolled in 475 VSLAs, women have shown increase in knowledge regarding financial literacy, nutrition, WASH, and 15 % of women have received income-generating activities loans.
2. 1,543 rural women established new income-generating opportunities: including mini-markets for trading; sale of detergents, food, and beverages; livestock keeping (chicken, ducks, and small cows); sewing and selling clothes and bedsheets; dairy distribution; fodder trading; and a group selling herbs and spices. To ensure sustainable income stream to their households, and to be financially empowered.
3. 1040 rural women were organized through VSLAs to work in different value chains (750 in artichoke value chain in Beheira, 160 in okra in Giza, 85 in grapes value chain in Menya, and 45 in the potato in Beni Suef). They are financially independent, and has a fixed income stream.
4. 1,079 producers (511 men and 78 women) received technical assistance and/or inputs (foliar fertilizers) on potato production.
5. 6,154 rural women participated in nutrition awareness sessions covering proper nutrition, childbirth, breastfeeding, and stages of childhood and adolescence These women became more nutrition aware about the importance of nutrition regarding their family health.
6. 5,602 rural women received training in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) awareness. They became more aware about hygiene and sanitation.
7. A group of 10 rural women potato growers from the last season (called the “She Feeds the World VLSA Group”), an umbrella for other female groups who replicated the model. They are now responsible for another 6 women producer groups totaling 37 women and 50 additional women working individually and cultivating their lands with potatoes. SFtW Egypt is investing in this model and trying to replicate and maximize the numbers of rural women groups.

While we work towards a sustainable future for the Indian tea industry, it’s important we pay attention to the female workforce, who often drives tea farming and processes in the background.
Almost 50% of the workforce on tea farms and plantations is made up of women, mostly daily workers, with a small percentage of them being tea farmers and landowners.
Most of the tea plucking is done by women on tea farms, as they are considered to be better and swifter with their slender hands. The long working hours, combined with handling household chores, take a toll on their health and livelihood. They face limited advancement opportunities, lack representation in the larger scheme of things, or cannot find support for their education and healthcare needs.
This International Women’s Day, we want to highlight the plight women face to the various stakeholders in the tea industry and work together to address these challenges for a truly sustainable future.
