#Today at the FAO - International Dairy Federation - National Dairy Development Board side event at the IDF Regional dairy Conference in Asia Pacific: Navigating challenges in dairy production: Innovations for sustainable sector transformation, IDF Director General, Laurence Rycken, presented the IDF-FAO partnerships at global and regional levels. Ms Rycken reviewed the long lasting collaboration wioth IDF that among other things includes the following landmarks: 👉 IDF and FAO have a collaborated since FAO’s foundation in 1945. 👉 IDF has been accredited to FAO since 1952. This accreditation allows IDF to participate in FAO meetings and collaborate on various initiatives related to dairy and food standards. 👉 When FAO and WHO founded the Codex Alimentarius in 1963, collaboration with this new organisation was immediate. 👉 Codex was inspired in the work done by IDF in milk and dairy to extend it to other food systems as well. Ms Rycken also mentioned the various initiatives, committees and fora inwhich IDF and FAO work together: 👉 IDF World Dairy Summit: IDF's flagship annual event, which often features contributions from FAO on global dairy trends, sustainability, and food security. 👉 FAO launch of the publication on the Contribution of terrestrial animal source food to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health outcomes, 2023. 👉 Committee on World Food Security (CFS) Meetings: IDF often collaborates with FAO in these meetings to discuss food security policies and the role of dairy. 👉 LEAP Partnership Meetings and Workshops: As part of the LEAP Partnership, IDF and FAO collaborate on events focused on improving environmental performance in the livestock sector. 👉 GASL Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Meetings: IDF and FAO participate in these meetings to promote sustainable livestock development. 👉 Codex Alimentarius Commission Sessions: IDF collaborates with FAO in these sessions to develop international food standards for dairy products.

If you have ever wondered whether politics, corruption, and regulatory incompetence can have lasting and collateral damage on something that is, on its face, not political, here’s a perfect example. Four years ago, the train went off the tracks with Covid. Whether it was a plan or just amazing global coincidences (you decide!) governments lied to us and corrupt, deep-pocketed, well-connected industries exploited an opportunity to profit while accusing others of “misinformation”. We were all told to “trust the science”, which was truly a moronic statement, and now the truth is coming out. Now, the FDA and broader US regulatory regime want to strong arm a trading partner by telling them that GMO corn is “not substantially different” from Non-GMO corn. This from an agency that does NOT review the science behind this claim. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Reading in this article that glyphosate residue has been found in Kellogg’s Corn Flakes makes me angry. It ought to make us all angry. Should we be surprised that our government is not doing what we thought they were doing? Well, we have come a long way in 4 years. So, I guess you might say something good has come of Covid. #foodsafety #gmo #agriculture

Pick of the Day (thanks vegconomist - the vegan business magazine) We are only at the outset of the cultivated meat industry, with emerging legislation on both sides of the Atlantic. The strong influence of traditional farmers, as evidenced by the current movement in France, makes it challenging to imagine a harmonious coexistence of both industries. In Europe, there was a previous halt on GMO crops, and I am concerned that a similar fate may be in store for cultivated meat. #cultivatedmeat #alternativeproteins #foodtech

When in Dhaka, and when your discussions are all about food systems transformation and the future, where do you look for inspiration? At the 4th Global Foresight4Food Workshop, which took place from 3-7 June last week, we were hosted at the well-equipped BRAC Savar venue. However, we also took the time to get out and explore parts of Dhaka's food system! For this purpose the Foresight4Food Initiative and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Bangladesh teams designed 'Learning Journey field visits'. 6 destinations, ranging from cattle breeding, mushroom development, large wholesale markets, workforce nutrition, poultry sector and fortified rice factories were visited on Thursday morning. The objective: appreciate the journey as much as the destination, explore the site, reflect on the long-term food system outlook, and have enriching discussions with your fellow travelers. On the bus journey, all participants were given question cards. These were designed to provoke in-depth, almost philosophical, discussions about the future of the food system, not only in Bangladesh but also globally. Some examples of the kinds of questions asked: - Geopolitical tensions and political fragmentation are on the rise all across the world: what does this mean for food systems? - Do you see a protein transition emerging, and if so, what would this mean for livestock and animal-food value chains? - What does the Anthropocene era (our current era when humans have a substantial impact on our planet) mean for how stakeholders should be engaging with food systems? - The science-policy interface is termed often as critical for food systems policies and decision-making: but what does that mean in at a time of 'fact-free politics'? and many more! All groups were warmly welcomed at all 6 destinations, and hopefully got a sense of the food system of Bangladesh and well as insights on food system transformation processes!
