I have a confession to make. I spend 90% of my time while at conferences and speaking on stage not concentrating on how to make my and Peter Ward's company Humanity Inc more successful. I instead spend that 90% of time meeting with possible collaborators and speaking on stage about exactly how we can all collaborate/partner to achieve our goal of giving everyone on earth more healthy years. Now I know what you're thinking, "Come on, MG, enough with the humble brag!". But actually this is a sincere confession. Indulge me for a moment as I illustrate with a true story. The other day a tech investor I actually quite like, posted that he got "the one message from a portfolio company that every early stage investor wants to receive" "we broke $1m ARR!" ($1m annual recurring revenue). And I'll say something possibly a bit controversial (and why I am confessing), and that is, for anyone that says they are in it to change the world for the better, that is NOT the one message you want to get from your portfolio companies. You should want messages like "we just helped another 5,000 customers pay off their debt" or "we just helped another 10,000 women successfully diagnose and treat their endometriosis". Revenue is very needed to sustain a business and grow it, but please do not make it your success measure. And the same goes for your mission. How your singular company is doing should not be your ultimate goal and top thing on your mind all the time. You should be spending most of your time thinking about how you and your company can work with every other mission aligned person/company to achieve your mission. Your company is not the mission. Your company is a fantastic vehicle to achieve your mission. Those of us who have traveled the road as a #founder can share the importance of perseverance to get to the game-changing "YES."   🙌   It is a journey filled with hustle, heart and grit....and those of us who continue its because we have a fire-in-the-belly where we strive to solve a meaningful problem.    My every day is committed to #brainhealth and I believe technology can play a big role in modernizing care in complex brain disease - #Alzheimers, #LewyBody, #MentalHealth, #Dementia, #Parkinsons, #ALS    When I first started my own entrepreneurial journey as the #CEO of DigiCARE Realized , I was named a finalist to the first-ever NIA Start-up Challenge. It was such a great opportunity to learn more about the offering of the National Institue on Aging and how they support innovation while fostering diversity among #founders. It was through this program I learned to embrace the importance of my lived experience as a female, hispanic founder as a point of differentiation among emerging #healthtech leaders. 🔴 Working to make a change sometimes starts with being pissed off 🔴 When Innovation Norway, Viken fylkeskommune, and Etableringstjenesten visited DISIE last week for inspiration, our CEO Karoline Barkvoll Holstad was invited to talk about our social innovation work at ReSearch Humanity. She chose to explain her way into innovation by telling her story. It starts with anger. With a mother having a physical disability, in her upbringing Karoline witnessed too many stares from strangers and misinterpretations of who her mother was. She stared back at them in anger. The anger over injustice became a strong driving force for her, and she learned to use it constructively. She found a sense of calmness in taking action - and it was the same feeling of acting upon injustice that led her into the world of NGOs. Both as a volunteer and as an employee, she was happy to engage in transformative work. However, she began to see how many ambitious projects were shelved because people didn't know where to start. The projects that they all knew were necessary simply became overwhelming - partly due to a lack of resources to develop those projects. That's what, almost 3 years ago, sparked the beginning of ReSearch Humanity: ✨"How can we make complex change more manageable?"✨ If you're facing a challenge where it's hard to figure out where to start - Reach out to us here, and we will create a process that safely guides you from challenge to tangible action that makes an impact.
