Multidisciplinarity and an interest for everything new both about technology and society, without forgetting the necessary critical thinking, this is the approach at the root of another work I contributed to in the last months, which I'm glad to share with you. Earlier this year I had to opportunity to collaborate with the Competence Center for 3D Transportation, a unique Swiss organization and think tank with the aim to gather the best knowledge and people about the future trends of transportation in the world. I was immediately fascinated by this institution, given my interest in the topic, and I metaphorically raised by hand for a collaboration. This is the result, a report on one of the most interesting and compelling technological and social trends: Urban Air Mobility and Vertical Take-Off and Landing Vehicles; my approach to the subject, as usual, has been the one of the keen researcher, whose aim is to find the substance behind the hype. I really recommend the reading of this report, product of a considerable research effort with the vision to contribute to the general and professional knowledge about this futuristic field. Jessica Coldrey's presentation at #SER2023 showcases the benefits and challenges of a promising technology for ecological restoration - drone tree-planting! Drone tree-planting is an innovative approach to ecological restoration using drones for reforestation and afforestation efforts. It involves using drones to distribute tree seeds in specific locations to help restore and expand forested areas. The process typically includes mapping the target area with a scout drone, engineering seed pods to meet the area's requirements, and loading these seed pods onto drones. The drones are then programmed to follow flight paths designed with artificial intelligence to optimize seed distribution. Once deployed, the seed pods are geotagged with that specific location, and in the following weeks, the soil pods will open up with rain. The pod ingredients help prevent predation by animals and insects and promote germination to help support the early growth of the seed within the pod. Jessica's project involved interviewing stakeholders on their views of drone tree planting. Her findings: stakeholders see drone tree-planting technology as a promising and exciting avenue for ecological restoration, especially in response to natural disasters, linking fragmented forest areas, and addressing labor shortages. Stakeholders also helped outline challenges, including seed supply, funding, and regulatory limitations, that must be addressed for the technology to reach its full potential.
