Wow Black History Month and Reggae Month in one - cultural and history overload! Many people ask why we have to celebrate black history. Quick answer - because no one else is and everyone needs to have their story told. It's the same thing with reggae. I come from a small nation that punches way above its weight and a lot of our punch comes from our music. This month I want to stretch my thinking and learn some lessons from popular reggae songs and some history. I am not sure that I have a whole month in me but let's see how far we go....... Day One! No Woman nuh Cry by Reggae Legend the late Robert Nesta Marley. At long last we are paying attention to mental wellness. According to the National Library of Medicine "It is increasingly being recognized that the mental health of employees is a crucial determinant in their overall health and that poor mental health and stressors at the workplace can be a contributory factor to a range of physical illnesses like hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, amongst others. In addition, poor mental health can also lead to burn-out amongst employees, seriously affecting their ability to contribute meaningfully in both their personal and professional lives". So how is mental wellness at your workplace? Are the women (and men) crying out for help? Do you have facilities in place to support them? Do they know about these resources? Can they use them without being shamed? Do your leaders know how to recognise when people are crying out for help? Where do you score on this list and what do you need to do?

A remarkable incident recently caught my attention, underscoring the significance of integrity. A remarkable lady's act of returning $70,000 resulted in global recognition and a slew of generous gifts, including a $10,000 contribution from the renowned Nigerian music artist, Davido. Listening to her share her testimony at Streams of Joy Church, a profound thought struck me. She revealed that a prophecy of global visibility had been spoken over her before she stumbled upon the forgotten money. This led me to contemplate the potential outcomes had she chosen to keep the money concealed. In the face of this prophetic revelation, she demonstrated remarkable self-discipline and integrity. Instead of misinterpreting the prophecy as a means to achieve personal gain, she chose to align her actions with the divine message. This serves as a powerful reminder that integrity prevails, regardless of external opinions or potential misconceptions. The lady's resolute commitment to doing what was right has etched an indelible mark, securing her a place of honor and distinction. Her story serves as a testament to the enduring truth: a virtuous reputation holds more value than any material wealth the world can offer. Let us all be inspired by this remarkable tale and remain steadfast in our pursuit of integrity. It is okay to be like everybody, if everybody is doing the right thing. The reason they say you should be different, Is because humans are prone to err. Dear Lady, I felt the need to talk about this Because over the time, we have been taught to be different But then, there is no need to be If everyone is doing the right thing. The reason I am saying this is because The urge to be different has affected most of us subconsciously. We have now trained our minds to antagonize things, Because we want to be different. We cannot agree with ideas and plans. Even when people are talking, we listen to counter, and not to understand. This is born out of the urge to be different, but we may not know. So while we try to be different, we should understand why we should; Because many People are doing and saying the wrong thing. I have been in a similar situation- but in that case, it was an expletive-laden rant, I believe. The employer chose to go no further, which I understood. I do, however, also agree with the perspective of the candidate in this case. It may have been beneficial to have a second interview, if this was the preferred candidate, and discuss the post. Obviously, there are time and cost issues related to this, and maybe other suitable candidates, but this could have been a learning experience for both sides, and a productive conversation. I also believe that companies need to develop structures around social media reviews and be very clear on what is acceptable and what is not. Also, what about candidates that do not have a social media presence, or have private accounts? There may be any number of vile content there that will not be known. More thought has to go into this. #recruitment #socialmedia

But the first step towards navigating them? Identifying and naming them. A clear understanding often means you're already halfway to the solution. As the saying goes, "a challenge well-stated is a challenge half-solved." Just as the queen regained her power by naming Rumpelstilzkin, we too can empower ourselves in the face of challenges by recognizing and articulating them.
