...yet today's talk became truly inspirational and even emotional when Sandra Richter and Keith Allman shared their personal motivation to push Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Masco Corporation and Hansgrohe Group to create a culture of belonging.
So why does DE&I matter to them and should matter to all of us?
🌟Diverse Perspectives Drive Innovation:
Having a team with varied backgrounds and experiences leads to better decision-making and innovative solutions.
🌟Self-Reflection Matters:
Acknowledging our biases (we all do have them, it's natural) and actively working to overcome them is essential for creating an inclusive workplace.
🌟Practical Results:
Embracing diversity isn’t just a moral imperative; it positively impacts business outcomes, including product development and company dynamics.
🌟Small Steps, Big Impact: Even small changes, such as getting to know colleagues’ interests or looking beyond surface appearances, contribute to a more inclusive environment.
✨ “We can all be the spark that ignites a virtuous cycle.” ✨

How do you approach Culture at your firm?
➡ "Don't leave culture to chance. By default your culture will be terrible because people are dysfunctional." - Shawn Sparks
In this clip Shawn Sparks lays out how he, Brad Johnson and the Triad Partners team intentionally approached building culture at their firm.
My big takeaways from Triad's culture:
➡ They don't do events at Triad, they do experiences.
➡ Families are invited to their experiential meetings.
➡ They have built loyalty that you don't find many places.

How do you unlock creative thinking and unblock your ability to innovate and inspire?
Go to Glastonbury.
Sharing this not for the Glasto gloat (the FOMO is real, trust me every year I am not in that field I have to hide from my Instagram, Whatsapp, 6Music, BBCIplayer, life, the lot 😫 ) but because being in that field or indeed many festivals, gig spaces, galleries, art centers or other can be truly transformative.
Glastonbury is like no place on Earth. It energizes, uplifts and inspires everyone who is lucky enough to get a ticket.
It's a place that unites everyone with its rich creativity, kindness and incredible community and it reminds us why culture, in whatever form, is one of, if not the most important part of establishing and affirming our beliefs and values as a society.
I am full up from my four days of escapism and connection, energised, and incredibly grateful for the freedom I have, whilst also acknowledging that this is not the case for many people right now.
So why am I sharing this?
I urge you to go, see, do, and experience more culture in whatever medium speaks to you or get curious about culture that is not your usual taste.
Make time for you as creatives, strategists, wordsmiths, artists; as colleagues, leaders, and people who are part of and contribute to our society.
It will leave you better at your job, happier, healthier, fuller and more hopeful.
See you front left.

"Culture is the invisible thread that weaves through every aspect of our lives, from the warmth of family gatherings to the collaborative spirit in our workplaces, and the diverse tapestry of beliefs and traditions in our society. 🌍✨
In our families, culture is the heartbeat of our traditions, passed down through generations, shaping our values, rituals, and the bonds that tie us together. It's in the laughter around the dinner table, the stories shared, and the celebrations that unite us. #FamilyCulture#Traditions
In the office, culture is the driving force behind teamwork, innovation, and growth. It's the shared vision that inspires us, the inclusive environment that fosters creativity, and the respect that empowers each individual voice. Together, we create a vibrant tapestry of ideas and perspectives. #WorkCulture#Collaboration
In society, culture is the mosaic of identities, beliefs, and customs that enrich our collective experience. It's the music that moves us, the art that reflects our diversity, and the conversations that challenge and inspire us to build a more inclusive world. #SocietyCulture#Diversity
Let's celebrate the richness of culture in every facet of our lives, embracing diversity, fostering unity, and creating a legacy of understanding and empathy. 💖🌟 #CelebrateCulture#UnityInDiversity"

Global People & Culture Leader helping companies be intentional about their culture through leadership development & coaching, team facilitation, performance management, equity & inclusion work, and more
"We start each meeting with gratitude, just like the team" -Evan P. (Celtics' VP, People & Culture) at last week's The PEER 150 conference in Boston. I love this team norm. There is a real power in positivity and gratitude, which sets a team up for continued success. There is also real power in having consistent team norms across an organization; it creates a culture of support and trust. Thanks for the reminder Evan, and go Celtics!
Camye Mackey (Chief People, Diversity, & Inclusion Officer of the Hawks) also had a great perspective to share at the PDXYZ-East conference. She said "you can have a building which is beautiful, but it's what you do with the people inside that makes the difference." YES! It doesn't matter if your space holds 16K people, or 16 people; you can take a space and make it theirs, which will build loyalty and community, leading to results. When people can see themselves in a space, they engage more, whether they are employees or customers. So go ahead and ask - what is important to your people and how can we make this space reflect them?
Tomorrow I will share the lessons Umang Shah shared with us about perpetual relevance. Spoiler, there is a lot to be gleaned from our Marketing friends when it comes to building culture!
As I sat in the Red Chair (Verizon Employee Spotlight Chair) for the first time taking a selfie with my crew, I reflected on all the amazing opportunities we have here at Verizon, and how we can use them to elevate each other. These opportunities include:
✔ Ability to learn new skills through our tuition reimbursement program and internal trainings (and being encouraged to do so by the leadership)
✔ Successfully pairing up with mentors in different groups to achieve goals (and many mentors love to help!)
✔ Ability to move between different business units
✔ Receiving awesome compensation and benefits for the difference you make here (and let me tell you - our bonuses are awesome)
✔ Opportunities to make an impact through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), initiatives, and volunteerism
At #networklife, we believe in building each other up and breaking down barriers together. We know that lifting others up is the best way to lift ourselves up. Are #vteamers crazy to think this way?
What do you think?

"Don't let planning paralysis stop you from creating something fun with your team! As someone once said, "The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing."
Our long-awaited Collinson summer party was the perfect opportunity to bring people together while still aligning with our data strategy priorities. By brainstorming creative ideas as a team, we developed an event that gave everyone a sense of togetherness, confidence and belief that with the right people, anything can be fun!
We carried that enthusiastic team spirit into our gathering last Thursday. After celebrating achievements and bidding farewells, we focused on the positive outcomes change can bring.
To liven things up, we took inspiration from Family Feud to spark some friendly competition and engagement. It was incredible to see the teamwork and interaction shine. Every individual when show full commitment for group to propel and push through, magic happens ✨
I'm so thankful to work with such a collaborative, energetic group of people. When we work together creatively, we can accomplish so much. Here's to more uplifting team events in the future!"

The Iceberg Model of Culture
Like an iceberg, company culture has the characteristic of being highly disproportionate in its actual visibility.
While some aspects of culture are easily perceived from the outside, often called the surface culture, what forms the foundation of a strong culture is often submerged, deeper in the values and beliefs of the organization, called the "deeper culture."
