How are you preparing for the workforce of the future? McKinsey & Company recently stated in a report issued in September that there are projected labor shortages for a number of healthcare roles by 2031. Projections, as of now, show the U.S. will need more than a million more nurses by that time, but more than 80 percent of positions will be left unfilled. Does this concern you? It absolutely should because that’s just in nursing, and this statistic is overwhelmingly true for the other healthcare roles too. What can we do about it? Here are some thoughts for leaders: 📝Focus on your culture and engage all professionals to establish a retention program truly focused on your people 📝Invest in education and professional development for all team members 📝Engage all higher education and training partners to develop solutions with a focus on career STEM awareness and programs 📝Launch innovative apprenticeships at all levels 📝Get rid of the bad leaders that are the cause of much of your retention challenges 📝Focus on your community engagement and perception to maximize being recognized as a top employer What would you add? 💭 #heartleader #healthcare #careers #culture #strategy #healthcareonlinkedin #nursesonlinkedin #nurses #nursing

Nurses are leaving the profession by droves A recently published survey of over 1300 nurses found that half of them have a side hustle. Additionally, nearly half of nurses with less than 3 years experience plan to transition to their side job full time at some point. This bodes very poorly for the already-stretched-too-thin healthcare industry. The Covid years were brutal. After seeing their peers working remotely from home, or hybrid, many nurses yearn for similar work conditions. These are the top 5 factors nurses find important today are: * maintaining mental health, * being present for family and friends, * maintaining a work/life balance, * maintaining physical health, and * excelling at work Is it a wonder there is dwindling desire to stick around a high-stress hospital / clinic setting for the long term? One of the challenges facing nurses is a huge burden of non-clinical tasks. Too much time is spent performing these essential, yet draining duties. What if nurses, and care teams in general, could offload certain tasks? Companies like Twig offer remote concierge care services that free nurses to practice at top of license. By using advanced AI, Twig is able to achieve a high level of efficiency, while seamlessly extending existing care teams’ bandwidth. #healthcare #nursing #digitalhealth #worklifebalance

💡 “As an RN who also is CEO of a complete senior health company, I have attended meetings too numerous to count with executives who define medicine by dollars and cents. Their view of healthcare is through spreadsheets, profit-and-loss statements, and claims management metrics.” 💡”Nurses are different. We aren't all about numbers. We are wired and trained to focus on people -- what people want, what people need, and how we can make their lives better.” 💡 “Nurses might even provide an edge for savvy leaders looking to improve their businesses…” 💡 “The U.S. is projected to be short 900,000 nurses by 2030” 💡 “Making matters worse is the fact that nurses, overworked and over-stressed because of the COVID pandemic, have been leaving the profession in droves. A Health Affairs study found the total supply of RNs plunged by more than 100,000 in 2021 -- the biggest 1-year drop in the past 4 decades.” 💡 “I believe that encouraging nurses to work the business side of healthcare can serve as a motivator that keeps good people in the healthcare profession -- and makes the overall industry better, too.” #nurses #whatreallymatters #healthcareinnovation #healthcareindustry #nurseleadership #healthcaretechnology

🗣️ “Gen Z Nurses don’t want to work” 🗣️ “These new nurses are lazy” 🗣️ “These new nurses only complain on social media” Maybe it’s not that Gen Z doesn’t want to work, maybe it’s that capitalism & profit driven healthcare has created an unsustainable career path that seeks to create new employees only to churn & burn them within 2-3 years. I don’t know about you but I was actually putting my job before everything, before my physical health & mental health. I was consumed by my role as a nurse & it led to deep physical & emotional harm. It wasn’t until I spoke to administrators at my hospital about how we were losing staff in droves & asked them what their plans were for retention that I realized I was working in a system that was exploiting me for my labor & did not care about the wellbeing of myself, my colleagues or the community. It was only then that I realized I wasn’t going to make meaningful change while contributing to a cycle of harm. Gen Z nurses aren’t lazy, they don’t lack work ethic: They lack experience, they lack support, they lack mentorship, they lack sustainability, they lack safety & they lack the dignity that they desperately need to feel that their work has meaning. All of that is lost under this system. We are not the problem, we are the future. 🫂 #nursing #nurse #hospital #healthcare #genznurses #millenialnurse #genz #workplace

Servant Leader & Executive | Transforming Public Sector & Healthcare | Strategic Coach, Mentor, & Board Advisor | Navy Veteran ⚓️
Insights from the 2024 Nurses Report. 🩺 This report reveals key opportunities in the nursing sector that healthcare leaders across government, academia, industry, and nonprofits should consider: 1. Nurses Have a Strong Sense of Mission: Nurses haves a strong sense of mission and love doing it because they find meaning to help other people. They want to be in a position to do impactful work and need their barriers removed to serve 2. Comprehensive Change Management for AI: While AI integration poses challenges, it also offers significant potential to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. Nurses express a need for better AI education to ease integration and enhance care delivery without compromising the human touch. 3. Addressing Staff Shortages: With ongoing challenges like burnout and high-pressure environments, increasing staffing levels and improving working conditions are urgent needs. Implementing national licensure could allow more flexibility for nurses to work across states, potentially alleviating shortages. 4. Mental Health and Wellness: Prioritizing mental health through employer-paid healthcare, fitness reimbursements, and comprehensive Employee Assistance Programs can support nurse well-being, essential for sustaining the workforce. 5. Career Development and Retention: Flexible scheduling, better compensation, and robust career advancement opportunities are critical for attracting and retaining nursing talent, ensuring a resilient healthcare system. Good report in helping guide leaders in making strategic decisions that support the vital role of nurses in evolving healthcare landscapes. #NurseExperience #EmployeeExperience #Nursing #HealthcareLeadership #AIinHealthcare #NurseWellbeing #HealthcareInnovation #Healthcare #Government #Culture #Mission

🔌 It’s great that we want nurses in boardrooms & as decision makers, innovators & collaborators. But beyond “the talk,” what are the proposed actions beyond saying “we need more nurses in (insert industry here) roles?” Let’s go a step further, how do we plan to support nurses in these roles that have often been reserved for those who have never worked in a clinical setting? I’ve met incredible, innovative nurses who have been picked up by projects only to be tossed to the side because they were given excessive responsibility with little support to manage unrealistic expectations outside of their traditional role. If your well funded & resourced organization is not not open to a little hand holding when it comes to collaborating with nurses to create innovative solutions, you’re setting us up for the same level of burnout we’re experiencing in clinical settings. There is a lot of *noise* about supporting nurses in innovation. You have massive institutions injecting funds to support a budding nurse led idea 💡 Which is great on the surface until you’ve realized they have been left without a safety net, support or the resources to navigate the unknowns of starting a company or large scale project. Something that we don’t have access to in traditional (& accessible) nursing programs. (An exception to this rule I’ve seen is the meaningful work by Marion Leary, PhD, MPH, RN at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing) There is a lot of *noise* about opening seats for nurses to lead decision making but when these nurses push the needle forward a little too far, they are “asking for too much change all at once?” What happens when our proposed solutions challenge the status quo & ask for organizations & leaders to take an honest look inward as to how they have contributed to the same issues we are hoping to address? I have a deep desire for nurses to lead the path forward in actually delivering safe, high quality & JUST healthcare for all. But I don’t believe the answer is just plugging a nurse in & hoping something transformational happens. 🔌 If it’s not just empty promises & a true desire to create meaningful change, I believe healthcare leaders must engage in radical accountability. Otherwise, you are merely passing the responsibility of cleaning up a mess nurses have had to sift through themselves for decades. #nursesonlinkedin #nurseinnovation #nurseleaders #nurseentrepreneur #nurseburnout #realtalk #healthcareaccess #healthinnovations #innovationday
