UPSKILLING AND RESKILLING IN THE AGE OF A.I. (HBR article - J. Tamayo, L. Doumi, S. Goel, O. Kovacs-Ondrejkovic, R.Sadun) I just read a brilliant article in HBR (Sept-Oct 2023 magazine), that focused primarily on reskilling but also upskilling, within the context of A.I. Essentially, the premise is that companies, private and public sector, will need to shift their organizational learning models, from upskilling employees to reskilling. The shift is necessitated by the accelerated pace of technological change. A.I. with its subsets of machine learning, deep learning and neural networks, are able to absorb not only major groups of repetitive and manual work-streams, but additionally grasp more sophisticated areas of 'knowledge-based' skills, like communications, coding and research. The OECD, (Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development), has said that the average half-life of skills is now less than five years. The societal impact on workers and the organizations that employ them, is massive in scope.

Interesting article about the impact of AI on learning and development and what we need to be thinking about both in terms of the actual skills people need to work with AI (important because of the risk not that AI takes people's roles but that people who know how to work with AI take roles) as well as the impact of AI on how people learn (design, development and delivery of learning). https://lnkd.in/eR6CVNBe
