"Thank you so much and I hope this contest can live up to its promise and stand up for dignity and peace." Nemo, the winner of 68th Eurovision song contest.
Nemo's song, in particular, was about their journey to accepting that non-binary status:
"Somewhere between the zeroes and the ones / That's where I found my kingdom come," they sing.
Their victory represents a big moment for the LGBTQ community which has, for a long time, treated Eurovision as a safe haven.
Last year's winner Loreen, Swedish with Moroccan heritage, who handed the crystal trophy to Nemo yesterday night, recently told them how important that support had been to her:
"Eurovision is a community that has an acceptance for diversity [and] different ways of being.
It's a very accepting and loving space. And it's us who are creating it, through creativity."
Europe has achieved a lot within the last 70 years to create a safe space for innovation, creativity, freedom of expression and other freedoms (move and trade).
We are serious about protecting it.
We want to be united by music (Eurovision slogan) and we can despite many cultural differences.
Nemo’s victory is a testament of talent and authenticity winning despite what others might think about them.
Congratulations to Croatia for their 2nd place and Ukraine for their 3rd place.
Inspiration for the rest of the world - copy Eurovision, make contest where talent competes and make sure it is a fair competition.
Make sure it is less about your military power and how much you can threaten your neighbors, it is just not anymore in fashion, already for the last 70 years. Stats don’t lie.
