In ‘The Twin Within’, we will take you on a journey into building digital twins: ❓ What technologies are behind them? ❓ What are the benefits for personalized health and care? ❓ And what ethical and social issues do they raise? Nanorobots hold great potential in the field of medicine. This is largely due to the possibility of highly-targeted delivery of medical payloads, an outcome that could lessen side effects and negate the need for invasive procedures. But how these microscopic particles can best navigate the body's fluids is a huge area of focus for scientists. Researchers are now reporting a new technique whereby nanorobots are made to swim swiftly through the fluids like blood to reach their destination. Though still an emerging field of science, nanoparticles are gaining something of a reputation as potential multitools for combating things like infections, cancer, type 1 diabetes and even prising open the blood-brain barrier. But they generally can't be simply inserted into the body and left to their own devices, which is why we're seeing the development of techniques aimed at getting them to where they need to go. These have included coating magnetic nanoparticles in proteins and guiding them magnetically to an injury site, scallop-inspired microbot swimmers, and integrating micro-motors powered by gas bubbles arising from reactions inside the stomach. This latter method brought about the first nanobot-delivered medical payload in a living creature back in January, but it is the magnet-inspired approach that more closely resembles the latest advance in the area. Scientists from ETH Zurich and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology report that they have designed new nanorobots capable of wading through bodily fluids with relative ease. The devices were made by stringing together a piece of polymer together with two magnetic, metal nanowires. This formed a three-piece chain about as long as the width of a silk fiber, which they then put to the test in a fluid that was thicker than blood.

🔬 The CS Experience at a Simulating Tissue Dynamics Workshop! Grateful for the incredible opportunity to participate in the Simulating Tissue Dynamics with Cellular Potts Models workshop held from 18 - 22 December 2023 in Lorentz Center, Leiden. 🌐 Surrounded by legends in the field from almost all corners of the world, including the brilliant minds behind the GGH acronym (Glazier-Graner-Hogeweg), as well as an assembly of talented researchers from both physics and biology, alongside fellow developers from platforms like MorpheusML. The energy and knowledge exchange were unparalleled, and provided me with an unique chance to dive into the intricacies of tissue and cell simulation. 🤯 In this low res picture, as all cool gems of moments taken between important people, you'll find me(arrow in black) among these remarkable individuals, each contributing to the cutting-edge modelling POTTSibilities. 🚀 As a starting Ph.D in tissue simulation, the workshop was a goldmine of insights. From the foundations to the latest breakthroughs, I learned invaluable knowledge that holds tremendous potential for simulating regeneration . 🎇 This is what stuck with me: - Everything is POTTSible; - The focus of implementation for modelling is vastly getting skewed towards the physical aspects of cell and tissue structure and behaviour - creation of biological validity; - There is no such thing as a Hamiltonian when modelling cellular biology, it's just an energy function that uses temperature; - Some modelling platforms are better to answer specific questions and some can't answer them all(developers will not hold you down to theirs); - AI is becoming a critical player here too; - There is a big concern in this community to be as precise as possible in modelling cell and tissue, and interoperable approaches between platforms might become a possibility in the future(users will be happy); - Stochastic processes could be innovative to substitute or better some of the methods used for Potts; - Unfortunately not many advancements were proposed towards biochemical modelling of tissue behaviour, but I was happy hear alot of discussion about rigid body, stress, strain, and multicellular modelling. With this, I am hopeful for what the future holds for the next 40 year Cellular Potts anniversary. However, I am sure this will not be the only event that will happen in the following decade, there is so much to be done! A massive shoutout to the organizers(Inge Wortel, Erika Tsingos, Claire Bleize and Roeland Merks, among others) for orchestrating this phenomenal event and providing the opportunity to showcase our work. 🌟 Excited to share a significant milestone! 🌟 I had the privilege of presenting my paper, titled **"Pretrained DeIT for Brain Tumor Classification: A Fine-Tuning Approach with Label Smoothing"**, at the 15th International Conference on Computing, Communication and Networking Technologies (ICCCNT) held at IIT-Mandi, in association with IEEE Electronics Packaging Society. This research explores the use of the Data-efficient Image Transformer (DeIT) model, fine-tuned for accurate brain tumor classification. Our approach leverages label smoothing to enhance model performance, showcasing the potential of transformer architectures in medical imaging.
