#biocontrol #cropprotection #industry #biologicals Network Our crop protection industry is committed to the support of sustainable tools to be made available to the farmers. #CropLife Europe has launched an anonymous survey of 6 questions to map out the potential number and types of "biochemicals" (e.g., #proteins, #enzymes, #RNA, etc.) that could enter in the EU market in the coming years. The objective is to communicate aggregated figures to the European Commission and Member States to encourage development of a fit for purpose regulatory framework for such novel technologies. The continuation of the "need to know" principle for new #cropprotection technologies in the EU is key. The survey is entirely managed by Steptoe & Johnson LLP to keep the confidentiality. Any respondent might receive a copy of the aggregate report upon notification through the survey. Link to survey https: https://lnkd.in/e8N9h8PJ Estimated time for responses: 5-10 minutes The survey will be open until Friday February 16th, 2024 *please share the survey within your network.

Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) effectively reduces chemical usage for P removal in wastewater treatment processes and relies on selected microorganisms known as phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) to remove phosphorus from wastewater. PAOs store food (VFAs such as acetic, propionic, and butyric acids) under anaerobic conditions and process food in aerobic conditions. In the anaerobic phase, PAOs store VFAs as a form of chemical energy and break phosphorus bonds within themselves to obtain energy for VFA storage. This triggers the release of ortho-phosphate, which is crucial for phosphorus uptake in the following aerobic phase. Successful EBPR is dependent on the influent wastewater quality and the balance between available VFAs and the phosphorus to be removed, emphasizing the importance of nutrient management in the wastewater treatment processes. Check out this article to learn more about EBPR - “What Everyone Should Know About Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal” by Ed Kobylinski, Mark Steichen, Dave Koch, Dave Bunch, and Tom Ratzki https://lnkd.in/eVixBjkH

While innovative biological products are entering the EU and global markets, regulatory challenges, including delays and misinterpretations, impede progress. Significant progress has been made in #biostimulants, attributed to stakeholders and the EU's lobbying group, EBIC (European Biostimulants Industry Council). Another category of biological products, "Natural Products," requires careful regulatory review as well. The recently published article titled "A Decision Tree for Assessing Risks of Natural Substances in Plant Protection introduces a risk-based decision tree for dossier data and natural substance evaluation. The stakeholders suggest use this tool for submissions, urging regulators to integrate it into their decision-making process.
