𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆! Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a congenital disorder with neurodevelopmental systems presenting around 2 years of age. ASD is characteristic of “persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction” as well as “restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.” Common symptoms associated with ASD include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mood and behavioral alterations, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. 💊 As the most accessible healthcare professionals interacting with patients with ASD, pharmacist can effectively communicate with these patients by adapting communication and counseling to the patient’s needs, minimizing distractions, reiterating key concepts, and usual visual aids, if necessary. Why did the therapist break up with the DSM-5? Because it had too many issues! 😄 Okay, that was a bit corny... but can someone please help me understand something? 🤔 With the DSM-6 expected to be released sometime next year, I decided to look into its history and was amazed at what I found: • DSM-I (1952): 106 Diagnoses • DSM-II (1968): 182 Diagnoses • DSM-III (1980): 265 Diagnoses • DSM-IV (1994): 297 Diagnoses • DSM-5 (2013): 541 Diagnoses That’s a lot of diagnoses! 😳 Now, I’m really wondering: Is there a point where the sheer number of diagnoses becomes counterproductive? Are we truly improving how we treat clients, or are we just adding more complexity? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Speech sound disorders can be challenging for both children and adults. It is an umbrella term that refers to any difficulty or combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments. These challenges can include phonotactic rules governing permissible speech sound sequences in a language. There are two types of speech sound disorders: organic and functional. Organic speech sound disorders result from an underlying motor/neurological, structural, or sensory/perceptual cause. On the other hand, functional speech sound disorders are idiopathic, which means they have no known cause. It is essential to identify and address speech sound disorders early on to ensure individuals receive the appropriate treatment. Apraxia of speech (AOS)—also known as acquired apraxia of speech, verbal apraxia, or childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) when diagnosed in children—is a speech sound disorder. Someone with AOS has trouble saying what he or she wants to say correctly and consistently. AOS is a neurological disorder that affects the brain pathways involved in planning the sequence of movements involved in producing speech. Tourrette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by repetitive movements (tics) and vocalizations (vocal tics). Acceptance and early intervention are crucial for individuals with TS to manage their symptoms and lead fulfilling lives. Acceptance: - Recognize that TS is due valid neurological condition, not because of personal failing. - Understand that actions are involuntary and not intentional behaviors. - Embrace the individual's unique experiences and strengths. Early Intervention: - Identify symptoms early, as early intervention can significantly have effect on outcomes. - As a parent you must understand that working with healthcare professionals, therapists, and educators to develop a personalized support plan is crucial. - Implement behavioral therapies, such as Habit Reversal Training (HRT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).
