System of Care in California is gaining steam. Many county Interagency Leadership Teams are recognizing the usefulness of their ILT meetings, as additional reforms in California come forward. Among them, Community Schools, Multi Payer Fee Schedule, and new requirements for Managed Care Plan agreements. There are important data elements that effective interagency work invites us to monitor and review. Sharing one another's outcomes is essential to understanding the ecosystem and recognizing where community needs may be present. The promise of progress in #youthmentalhealth #behavioralhealth The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), announced $206 million in grant awards towards youth mental health. Also today, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will make more Medicaid funding available for school-based health services in Virginia, improving health care access, including mental health services. Combined, these awards will help expand access to mental health services for students in schools, bolster the behavioral health workforce, and improve access to mental health prevention and treatment for children and youth in communities across the country.https://https://lnkd.in/eeHVJKjG

My second first-authored paper is out and it is free/open access! In this paper, Mara Hollander, Apryl Alexander, PsyD and I explored the policies passed at the federal and North Carolina state level related to community-based mental healthcare over the last 60 years. We were interested in understanding how policies may (or may not) have impacted inequities in mental healthcare access for racial and ethnic minoritized communities. Spoiler alert: inequities continue to persist and policy initiatives have only slightly moved the needle! We provide some recommendations based on policy gaps we found through this descriptive analysis and hope this paper stirs some conversation around whether policies that are implemented truly target the biggest needs that face community-based services in serving populations with the greatest barriers to accessing care! https://lnkd.in/esCxzCAg

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) has released a new, groundbreaking Social Justice Framework, which was created to provide public health practitioners with a blueprint for embedding social justice into the work of chronic disease programs. In collaboration with partners, NACDD developed the Framework to guide the work of the Association alongside State and Territorial Health Departments and Members who seek to advance equity and social justice in public health. NACDD invites public health practitioners to read and utilize the framework to ensure all individuals have access to a just, fair, and healthy life. As an anti-racist organization, NACDD promotes social justice and well-being via resources like this new Framework, so communities can build healthier futures. North Carolina DHHS Secretary to Have Increased Oversight and Control Over LME-MCOs The North Carolina General Assembly recently decided to give the Secretary of the State’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) more control and oversight over the State’s six behavioral health management companies, known as LME-MCOs. North Carolina is one of several states that utilize a regional managed care system to provide behavioral health services to uninsured individuals and people enrolled in Medicaid. The LME-MCOs have struggled in recent years to develop tailored plans for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as individuals with severe and persistent mental health issues. North Carolina lawmakers have decided to give the Secretary of DHHS the authority to decide how many LME-MCOs there should be in the state as well as the structure of the organizations.

May 27th we are hosting a Health Equity Learning Lab zO (HELLO) webinar: A public health approach to the reform of South Australia’s Child and Family Support System. Presentations from Charlie Murray, Dana Teusner & Kelly Jones from the SA Department of Human Services. The Intervention Research Directorate (EIRD) team will present an overview of the Child and Family Support System (CFSS) reform. EIRD was established in 2016 in response to the findings of the report of the Nyland Royal Commission into Child Protection Systems in South Australia. The Nyland Report called for a stronger emphasis on prevention and early intervention in child safety and wellbeing service responses, with a focus on responding to cumulative harm and families with known risk factors for child abuse and neglect. The CFSS is a combined system of services and supports delivered by the Department of Human Services Safer Family Services, Non-Government Organisations and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations. The CFSS forms part of a public health approach to keeping children safe. The presentation will focus on policy and practice, monitoring and service needs and evaluating outcomes of the work undertaken by EIRD to date. Register here: https://lnkd.in/e5pseqME
