February is here, and so is American Heart Month – a time dedicated to spotlighting the threat to health that is heart disease.
Back in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson, himself a heart attack survivor, initiated this health awareness month. Every February since, U.S. presidents have declared it American Heart Month, increasing awareness and furthering progress against the deadly disease.
In recent years, American Heart Month has taken on added significance due to the impact of COVID-19 on public heart health. Recent research suggests the virus may harm the heart and vascular system. Additionally, while in lockdown, unhealthy behaviors like poor diet, increased alcohol intake, and limited physical activity have risen, contributing to heart disease in Americans.
Heart disease remains the most serious health threat to Americans and the leading global cause of death. Prevention is crucial – adopt a healthy lifestyle, from not smoking to maintaining a healthy diet and weight, and regular health checkups. Make heart health a priority and use this month to reinforce the importance of heart health, advocate for research, and strive for longer, healthier lives!
