Urgent Call for Cohesive AI Strategy in Canadian Military A new strategy document from the Department of National Defence highlights a critical issue: the Canadian military's fragmented approach to artificial intelligence. This disjointed methodology could have significant implications for national security and operational efficiency. Experts from both the tech industry and civil society are raising alarms. They stress the importance of a unified and coordinated strategy to harness AI's full potential while mitigating risks. The call to action is clear: Canada must act swiftly to develop a robust, comprehensive AI framework. Addressing these challenges now is essential for maintaining a competitive edge and ensuring the responsible use of AI technologies in national defense. #ArtificialIntelligence #NationalDefense #Innovation #Canada #TechStrategy #CyberSecurity

Excited to share FPA's latest issue brief on what it will take to deter cyberattacks, given the impact of AI on cyber warfare. In addition to our own analysis, we have four excellent contributions from experts across industry, government, and academia, all of which make for timely reading ahead of NATO 75. https://lnkd.in/eQrApSua

The information domain is the domain of #AI. Here is an excellent Army-centric perspective, discussing ways human-machine integrated forces achieve advantage by increasing the time and space standoff from an adversary. I hope to see more concepts like this, especially in the areas of information operations and cognitive warfare because there's no greater standoff than preventing an adversary from fighting in the first place. "The Army attempts to achieve information advantage through five levers. First, it attempts to enable it to enhance C2. Second, it protects it to secure data, information and networks. Third, it informs it to maintain trust and confidence. Fourth, it influences it through directed information operations that effect behavior change of foreign relevant actors. Fifth, it uses it to attack and so affect threat actor C2. Overall, the Army’s approach to information advantage is guided by the principles of offensively oriented operations, combined arms and the knowledge that information is commander driven and Soldier enabled." U.S. Cyber Command has created an artificial intelligence task force to help it identify technologies that have great promise for full adoption. The effort is born out of an AI roadmap that the command developed, which was mandated by Congress as part of the fiscal 2023 annual defense policy bill. The legislation charged Cybercom and the Department of Defense chief information officer — in coordination with the chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, director of the National Security Agency and the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering — to jointly develop a five-year guide and implementation plan for rapidly adopting and acquiring AI systems, applications, supporting data and data management processes for cyber operations forces. https://lnkd.in/gUk_PuP2

Full PDF report provided by Microsoft detailing ongoing efforts by state backed hacking groups in #China, #russia, #Iran, #northkorea utilizing #ai in recent hacking efforts. “Among the state-sponsored hacking groups identified in the report: • A top Russian team associated with the military intelligence agency GRU used AI to research satellite and radar technologies that might be relevant to conventional warfare in Ukraine. • North Korean hackers used AI to research experts on the country’s military capabilities and to learn more about publicly reported vulnerabilities, including one from 2022 in Microsoft’s own support tools. • An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps team in Iran sought AI help to find new ways to deceive people electronically and to develop ways to avoid detection. • One Chinese government group explored using AI to help create programs and content, while another Chinese group “is evaluating the effectiveness of LLMs in sourcing information on potentially sensitive topics, high profile individuals, regional geopolitics, US influence, and internal affairs,” Microsoft wrote.” - Via The Washington Post Worth a read.
