Go home to get better. Something to remember for our loved ones and even ourselves. We seem to assume that facilities offer more. That hospital rehab is better, that skilled nursing facilities or "Rehab Facilities" offer a more advanced rehab journey. But what about motivation? AND what about the specificity of training. Facilities try to replicate cars, stairs, unlevel surfaces. However nothing will exactly replicate what a patient faces at home. Being able to train patients within their own environment can't be beat! Patient motivation when being surrounded by barriers they know they must overcome also is huge! No one is coming to bring you your meal, family cant wheel you down the ramp forever. Want to go to your favorite location? to church? to the park? That's motivation. All this makes me a huge advocate for home health. According to the March of Dimes, there are 2,158 operating birthing hospitals in the U.S. I am investigating how many of them offer occupational and physical therapy during postpartum admission to improve function after delivery. So far, I have 38 hospitals who offer postpartum rehab during the hospital stay: https://lnkd.in/gg27dP_Z In some of those hospitals, only 1 therapist is providing rehab to postpartum moms. If they get sick or leave, there is not a back-up therapist to replace them. That hospital no longer offers rehab during postpartum admission. If my initial goal was to help improve maternal outcomes with early access to rehabilitation services, then I am on a mission to find therapists who are providing their services directly in the hospital and home, regardless of whether the birthing hospital offers this as a universal option to families who choose to deliver there. If you offer OT or PT services after birth or pelvic surgery in the hospital, home, or virtually, please help spread the word about your practice by adding your information to a directory created for people who want to improve their postpartum and post-surgical function earlier (before the standard 6 weeks to start rehab). As surgeons, our priority is to ensure the health and welfare of our patients. We're trained to act quickly and sometimes aggressively, even if it means disregarding our own well-being.
