As the team work full steam ahead on the upcoming #watermanagement forum in Emerald in September and the 2022-23 Fitzroy Basin Report Card release in October, the 2022-2023 #annualreport, out now, offers a significant opportunity for the team and our valued partners to look at the #yearinreview. The message from our incoming Chair Tim Kendrick highlighted: "The major #achievement for the Partnership has been the commencement of the new Fitzroy Basin Wide Monitoring Program with data from the first round of sampling used for the first time in the 2021-22 Fitzroy Basin Report Card. While the Monitoring Program is now being managed by partner and host Fitzroy Basin Association it is important to recognise the integral part Fitzroy Partnership played as a #broker of #collaboration towards a more comprehensive monitoring program for the region." At a recent Board Meeting for the Resources Legacy Fund, we were treated with a field trip to one of our projects. We traveled to Big Basin Redwoods State Park for a tour and presentation by California State Parks Director Armando Quintero, SemperVirens Venture Capital 's Sara Barth and Parks California's Kindley Walsh Lawlor. Established in 1902, Big Basin Redwoods State Park is California’s oldest state park. Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the park is home to ancient coastal redwood trees, some of which are over 2,000 years old and among the tallest on Earth. The park provides habitat for a range of wildlife, including black-tailed deer, gray foxes, and banana slugs. Its creeks and waterfalls contribute to the park’s ecological richness, fostering aquatic life and providing a reliable water source for both the forest and nearby communities. Culturally, Big Basin has played a role in the lives of Indigenous peoples. Tribes like the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe have long connections to these lands, relying on their resources for sustenance and cultural practices. On August 18, 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire swept through the entire park, radically changing the landscape. The fire’s rapid spread was fueled by a combination of dry conditions, strong winds, and the dense vegetation. The flames not only burned the towering redwood trees but also consumed the park’s historic buildings, campgrounds, and infrastructure. Most of the old-growth redwood trees survived, plant life is returning, and animals again roam. Rebuilding efforts at the park have been a collaborative endeavor involving state agencies, environmental organizations, and the local community. The Reimagining Big Basin project resulted in visioning principles that now guide all future planning at the park. This video provides an overview of the park, including compelling imagery of the fire impacts, evacuation, and revisioning efforts. The Resources Legacy Fund programs have supported Big Basin specifically, and state parks broadly, over many years.

State Negotiation Team Holds Talks with Landowners on Porgera Project The State Negotiation Team working on the community development agreement (CDA) for the Porgera Project held a meeting with landowners to discuss their benefits. The project is jointly owned by the Government and Barrick Niugini Limited (BNL), with the government and its partners owning 51% equity and BNL owning 49%. The meeting was attended by 25 Special Mining Lease (SML) landowner agents, ward councillors of the Porgera Rural local level government, and other stakeholders. The aim of these meetings is to prepare stakeholders for the upcoming CDA forum. https://lnkd.in/gpBxFZ8f...

Gordon Edwards, Brennain Lloyd, Wendy O’Connor (WTNFN) and company all insist that places like Dryden, Kenora and Winnipeg will be “downstream” of a DGR at the Revell site, despite being hundreds of meters deeper than the surface elevation of those cities and surrounding watersheds. Can we find other examples where a watershed or lake is “downstream” of a much deeper mine, and learn something about the consequences of that? Certainly: The world’s largest salt mine, at Goderich in Ontario, excavated a few hundred meters BELOW Lake Huron – which to Edwards & co. means that Lake Huron is “downstream” of the salt mine. Seriously. You can’t make this stuff up. And, just to be sure, the salt mine is NOT making Lake Huron water salty, despite being “in the watershed”.

Acquisition puts prized arctic char strain in Canadian land-based farmer’s hands, igniting growth prospects The recent acquisition by Sapphire Springs has positioned the Canadian land-based arctic char farmer to capitalize on growth opportunities, as it secures access to a prized arctic char strain. Sapphire Springs, headquartered in Winnipeg, made headlines in November with its acquisition of Icy Waters, a fellow Canadian company renowned for supplying international markets with ova from a unique strain of Arctic char. Douglas Hotson, COO of Sapphire Springs, emphasized the strategic importance of this move, stating that acquiring Icy Waters, despite its relatively small 120-metric-ton farm, grants them exclusive access to a rare strain of Arctic char. "Approximately 10,000t of Arctic char are sold globally, according to our estimates. We intend to launch a 5,000t facility in Winnipeg. At that point, we believe we will be the single largest producer. And we would be that with or without Icy Waters," he said in a recent interview.
