"Think about the millions of pounds of stretch film that are used to wrap pallets of goods that are being shipped and transported.... from the back from the back of a retail outlet or from distribution center. Most all of that today is going to landfill. And that is incredibly high value product that has the opportunity to be used in very high performance- and high quality-required applications. So that's the big opportunity," said Alan Schrob of NOVA Chemicals this morning at PLASTICS (Plastics Industry Association)'s #FlexForum. Flexible packaging and film circularity (recovery, sortation, recycling, and end markets)--with chemical complementing mechanical methods--is the name of the game here.

The use of plastics in the food industry is strictly regulated. That is why only very few recyclates can be used in this field so far. In the case of recycled polycarbonate chocolate molds, for example, the recyclate does not meet the requirements for reuse as a mold. Therefore, a processing strategy for a closed loop for chocolate molds made of polycarbonate was developed at the Institute for Plastics Technology at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
