Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team maybe going through a difficult phase in Formula 1 but their star driver Lewis Hamilton isn't giving up yet "I've been incredibly proud of everybody. Everyone has been working insanely hard" "We've been making big steps. I think the biggest step we took was when we got to Monaco and the car has really progressed a lot since then" "We have a better understanding of where to position the car. It's been a lot more consistent - podiums, top-five finishes - which has been great" ”And, generally, we've been getting solid, great reliability. So, there's lots and lots of good bits" #HamiltonProud #MercedesTeam #LH44 #NeverGiveUp #Teamwork #HardWorkPaysOff #Formula1Progress #MonacoMemories #ConsistentPerformance #PodiumFinishes #ReliabilityMatters #StrongTogether #LewisHamilton #MercedesAMG #Formula469

Are you racing with your team? I’m back with another #SalesStrategy inspired by a show I’ve been enjoying lately: Formula 1: Drive to Survive. On the racetrack, the team lead is responsible for the strategy of the entire race. The lead chooses which car is in front, and which one follows-up behind. This is similar to big sales. The responsibility is on the leader to choose the right strategy to land the deal. It’s important for the sales team to provide support to the individual in front so the team can win the race, or land the deal. "A driver needs to be a lion in the car." -Toto Wolff, Principal of Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team #formula1 #salesleads

I’ve been imagining how my old colleagues at Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team are feeling as they arrive at work today. Nothing beats the atmosphere around the factory the day after a race win. For the most part, working at an F1 team is just like any other job; you turn up, do your work and go home again. However, there are very few jobs where the impact of your work is played out to a global audience, where a tenth of a second can mean the difference between winning and losing, and the emotional highs and lows have such intensity. There is no hiding in F1, no waiting until the end of the quarter to see how the results have gone, no wondering if what you are doing is making a difference – everyone in a Formula 1 team knows that their work matters. So today in Brackley, team members will be arriving with a feeling of satisfaction of a job well done. The exhilaration of the win yesterday will have subsided to be replaced by a confidence, a spring in the step and a smile as they congratulate each other when they see their colleagues. The race debrief in the race bays, a sea of PETRONAS green race-winners t-shirts, with a glass of bubbly in hand, won’t be triumphalist. Yes, this is the second win in a row, but the first was down to luck when Max and Lando collided. Lewis’ win yesterday was balanced by the DNF for George. There will be an honest analysis of what went well and what went wrong, with an understanding of just how narrow the margins of victory were for Lewis; a couple more laps and Max would have had a fighting chance of taking first place. Above all, there will be a sense of humility because this is not the end of the season; it is just one result, albeit a great one. As they leave the debrief, their minds will already be focussed on the next race, eager to do what they can individually and collectively to perform at the highest level at the Hungaroring in two weeks time, in the hope that the Racing Gods allow them to taste the sweetness of victory again.

I love this message. All too often we forget what it was like soon after college and we try to push our children, employees, mentees, etc. to find a purpose before they have developed the knowledge of who they are and before they have experienced enough to know what they really want to do. As leaders, it's important that we remember that our goals are to provide an environment that cultivates growth and development, especially for entry level employees, so that we can mutually benefit from their new skills and passions. It's also important that we understand that we are likely not the last place that they will work, and probably not the same industry, and we need to be ok with that. During my quarterly 1-1 meetings with my skip level reports, I make sure to ask if they are doing work that they still enjoy and ask what else they would like to work on. I also ask what they have recently learned. All of these questions give me a good idea on where I need to adjust to create the type of environment as I mentioned above. Feel free to comment on your strategies for encouraging this type of environment.

I have a lot of admiration for Toto Wolff (although I am not a Mercedes fan. Ciao tifosi!). I also agree with his thoughts on the uncertainty of a career path when one is just getting started. Starting college at mere 16 years old, I really had no clue what I wanted to do longer term, constantly failing to the traditional interview question of "where do you see yourself in 10 years?". I would recommend to my younger self to learn more about business and financials earlier in my journey. It helps to understand how the machinery of the world works regardless of the career path. #mentoring #careerdevelopment #business
