Growing #Parcel Volumes On our streets, parcels are shipped in greater volumes as cities grow. For now, VANs and Trucks dominate this sector.  With a few exceptions, cities need help handling the surge in delivery traffic over the last few years. 2023 marked a growth of 3.6% in volume and a value of €542. e-commerce sectors always show growth in all aspects. A staggering increase in deliveries has been indicated in the latest figures released by the GLS (BIEK). The #B2C segment saw the greatest increase in deliveries during the second half of 2023, as well. On average, 80.000 deliveries were made each day during this period. According to European Commission , #UFT vehicles could reduce total road-transport emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by at least 3%. And URBANIZED’s proposed solutions, when applied at the fleet level, could make deliveries at least 51% more affordable than with a standard electric-vehicle fleet, according to the project. The last mile accounts for 15% to 25% of all vehicle kilometers traveled. Freight contributes between 20% and 40% of urban transport’s emissions of CO2, the main greenhouse gas responsible for climate change. The EU is seeking to become climate-neutral by 2050 and, to help achieve that goal, has agreed to ban the sale beginning in 2035 of new cars and vans powered by petrol or diesel. The last-mile delivery landscape will be radically reshaped by 2030. Within 6 years the perfect storm will happen in the German Parcel market: Cities will impose regulatory restrictions on delivery traffic 🚦 Plus Couriers will have to deliver 5.4 billion parcels 📦 yearly. They forecast a 30% capacity gap between parcel demand and delivery capacity! Simply adding more delivery vans is not a viable solution 🚫🚚 Carriers with alternative transport modes like cargo bikes , parcel lockers , and autonomous delivery shuttles must counter reduced traditional delivery capacity in vans. Bridging this gap requires a joint effort from carriers, shippers, cities, and consumers! 🤝 A collective partnership is needed to optimize processes, generate new capacity, and adapt shopping behaviours to reduce avoidable excessive parcel volumes, such as returns or demand for fast delivery. Cities are uniquely positioned to steer the entire mobility ecosystem and define carrier-agnostic and open/shared solutions. The atttached article (unfortunately in Polish) suggests that an open network is shaping up in Poland which can genuinely challenge InPost. I have been saying for years that the only chance to defeat the locker behemoth in its stronghold would be an agnostic network encompasing the main CEP operators and, ideally an e-commerce player. While there is still a long and winding road to achieving this elusive goal, this is the first important step in the right direction, especially when we look at the exisiting co-operation between ORLEN Paczka and Allegro. The question now, is when will Geopost (DPD Polska) DHL UPS and FedEx see the light...and whether the #PolishGovernment will seek to integrate Poczta Polska S.
