How to reduce waste and help those in need... ?

#ALDIresponsible | ALDI Portugal donates 12 truckloads of textiles nationwide 👕   ALDI Portugal has launched a major aid campaign and is donating textiles worth around two million euros. Together with the non-profit organisation ENTRAJUDA - Apoio a Instituições de Solidariedade, the donations will be distributed to around 800 institutions across the country. This campaign is particularly close to ALDI Portugal's heart, as the company has a strong commitment to national well-being. Whether through food donations, job creation or infrastructure development. As a basic retailer, it ALDI’S desire to support people in need with relief supplies and cover their basic needs.    👉 In total, around 400 pallets of textiles were collected over the course of the year. This is the equivalent of around 12 fully loaded lorries. Now, ALDI Portugal was happy to deliver all of them to ENTRAJUDA. Among the items donated were clothes for men, women and children, but also home textiles (comforters, cushions, blankets, towels, bed linen) and other accessories that are in short supply in the institutions, to ensure support for those who need it most.    💬" We are committed to making a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate. We are also citizens and neighbors, and we want to use our skills and experience to help solve societal challenges that go beyond our business. SIGNS OF HOPE In the face of adversity, the first signs of hope emerge. We must recognize the remarkable resurgence of Calçados Kariby, a textile factory founded by the Jung brothers, descendants of Germans, which was devastated by the flood. The incredible rapid return to production is not just a sign of hope but a testament to the resilience and determination needed after the catastrophic floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The affected areas still lack sustainable access to clean water, hygiene products, and food. We are preparing for the next Instituto Caça Fome mission this weekend, where we will assemble more food baskets to be sent to Rio Grande do Sul. Additionally, Rödl & Partner | South America will audit all donations received by Caça Fome to ensure that the donations are used to provide food for the disaster victims. Does anyone know of any campaigns to ban charity plastic bags from letterboxes in the UK? There are plenty of high-street charity shops. I live in a borough that already has a twice-a-month clothing curbside scheme. The vast majority of donated clothing will end up in an African landfill (or polluting a river or two). There are no clear stats for the UK because the clothing is shipped to the African continent, to hide the issue. So, do we also need a cap on the number of charities collecting clothing? If we make it too easy to clear out closets we will constantly see this excuse to binge fast-fashion. People will justify that it is 'for charity' when actually there is something very dubious about these (un-recyclable) plastic bags. As World Environment Day comes around, we’re asking Australians to adopt a Vinnies #prelovedpledge. The pledge is a challenge to forgo new garments, and instead to shop only for pre-loved treasures for a set amount of time. Vinnies saw 3.2 million kilograms of donated textiles pass through our distribution centres in NSW last financial year, which shows that massive amounts of discarded fashion items are sent to op shops around the state. Second-hand fashion offers substantial environmental and charitable benefits. Choosing pre-loved over new reduces our carbon footprint and funds essential services for those in need. Let's keep our communities clean and green! - Dispose Responsibly: Flatten those cardboard boxes and break down packaging materials. - Bin It Right: Make sure your waste is sorted correctly. Separate recyclables from general waste to make the disposal process smoother and more environmentally friendly. - Community Cleanup: Coordinate with your neighbours for a post-Christmas cleanup. A united effort makes the task more enjoyable and helps build a stronger sense of community. - Christmas Tree Recycling: If you had a real Christmas tree, check for a local tree recycling program. Many places turn them into mulch or compost. - Donate Unwanted Items: If you received gifts you don't need, consider donating them to charity. 'Tis the season of giving, after all! - Check Local Pickup Services: Some areas offer special pickups for bulky items. Check with your local council or waste management service for details on when and how to arrange this service. Did you know in the past year, Brisbane Airport donated 14.5 tonnes of items to charities, or the equivalent of 88 supermarket trolleys filled to the brim? Items surrendered by #BrisbaneAirport travelers, who may be unaware of international flight carry-on regulations, are helping Queenslanders grappling with the challenges posed by the cost of living crisis and domestic violence. Department of Home Affairs safety regulations limit quantities of powders, liquids, aerosols and gels that can be taken in carry-on baggage when travelling internationally. This has led to the surrender of thousands of items at airport security, including Vegemite, peanut butter, Nutella, honey, manuka honey, soy sauce, shampoo, beauty products, sunscreen, perfumes, deodorant and toothpaste. Personal care items including shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste are donated to GIVIT.org.au which distributes the items to more than 25 organisations across #Brisbane. Unopened fresh food and drink are donated to Vinnies QLD as well as Hands & Feet which delivers food to churches and charities that distribute them. Travellers are also coming unstuck by attempting to take more than 100ml of alcohol through security in their carry-on luggage. In the past year, 323 bottles of wine and spirits have been surrendered at security screening points. The donation of these items to Kedron Wavell Services Club has resulted in $4,577 being given to Mates4Mates to support current and ex-serving Defence Force members and their families experiencing physical injuries, mental health impacts and social disconnection. The reduction in waste is part of Brisbane Airport’s #sustainability focus, which sees the airport now recycle 25.5% of its waste, with a target of zero waste to landfill by 2030.
