How can we show our support for prisoners in our society? These individuals are often hidden away and forgotten, but they are still our loved ones and family members. We want them to come home and make a difference in our society. However, when the author was in prison, they struggled to receive responses from organizations that claimed to support them. If we truly want to call ourselves liberators and fight against oppression, we must begin by working to liberate those who are trapped in cages. Let's come together to support the prisoner-class of our society and work towards a brighter future for all. #prisonerliberation #solidarity #endmassincarceration

Additionally, BNS2 introduces community service as a new form of punishment, yet to be defined in detail. #legalinsights #judicialreview #lawandlegislation #fundamentalrights #communityservice Dr Rubina Mittal

📣The Hungarian Helsinki Committee has just published its latest Rule 9.2 submission to the #CoE Committee of Ministers focusing on the status of #implementation of #ECtHR judgments in the István Gábor Kovacs (Varga and Others) group of cases, concerning #prison #conditions in #Hungary. The group has been proposed for examination at the forthcoming 1492nd CM meeting (DH) in March 2024. 💡Hungary is yet to respond effectively to the large-scale violations concerning #detentionconditions established by the Strasbourg Court. The recent surge (after a short period of decline) in the number of persons detained is a source of grave concern. Persons detained in sub-standard conditions continue not having a preventive #remedy at their disposal, whereas the compensatory remedy in place continues suffering from important shortcomings, already clearly identified by the Committee of Ministers. The detailed HHC submission sheds ample light to the current state of play in the Hungarian prisons. Do give it a read!
Hungarian prison conditions still fall short of European Court of Human Rights standards. It's crucial to prioritise non-custodial alternatives to imprisonment; humane treatment, reintegration, and respect for fundamental rights in prisons. Despite progress towards universal abolition—with 66 countries banning it in all settings and 27 more committed to full prohibition—many children worldwide are still left behind. This latest briefing from End Corporal Punishment highlights the urgent need to end legally sanctioned violence against children in justice systems to ensure every child's right to a violence-free childhood. By amplifying the voice of the young person affected by parental imprisonment, we aim to eradicate the associated stigma, and demonstrate the need to identify and support children with a parent in prison. https://lnkd.in/gK4vytCx
